Yesterday we opened the doors of the new Mary Ward Adult Education building in Stratford.
The project has been more than 5 years in the making and has involved turning an old, dilapidated industrial building in Stratford into the incredible, bright, fun space it is today, with generous donations from many, particularly from Sadiq Khan. Opening the building, Deputy Mayor Jules Pipe, highlighted that Newham, one of the most deprived boroughs in London, will benefit from Mary Ward’s mission to tackle under representation and will unleash the creativity of the community to build prosperity for its members.
During the emotive ceremony, we heard testimonies from students, partners and beneficiaries about the incredible work done at Mary Ward Adult Education , Blackfriars Settlement, Mary Ward Legal Centre - including helping older people stay active, getting asylum seekers back into education and giving legal support to the most vulnerable.
I was so moved and impressed by every single one of the stories, and I wanted to share one with you:
L came to the stage scared and nervous and this was also how she felt when she first came across Mary Ward. She lived in a women’s hostel at the time having spent her whole life in care - she couldn’t read or write. One of our tutors, Robert, gave her 121 lessons and once she could read and write he encouraged her to join one of our art courses. She was the first person to obtain a distinction. Her confidence grew and she eventually obtained a place in Central St Martins where she’s proudly graduated from - she'll be exhibiting two of her drawings at the Saatchi Gallery soon... and if that wasn't enought, she’s also writing a book about her 'colourful' life. No doubt it will become a best seller soon. She said that for her Mary Ward was more than a college - it was a family where she got affection, support and ultimately confidence and the brightest of futures.
We run so many courses... and we pride ourselves that someone with a PHD can be learning art (or a foreign language, or sculpure or one of the hundreds of skills we teach) with someone living in the most difficult and deprived circumstances - so if you're looking to challenge yourself to learn a new skill, sign up to one of our classes https://lnkd.in/djWzJN6v. Not only you'll be helping yourself... you will also be contributing to the education of others who can't afford it.
Thank you to the incredible management team - Therese Reinheimer-Jones, Susan Craggs, Liz Ranger, Paula, Juliet and the rest of the Mary Ward team for all their hard work and dedication - you are changing and saving lives as we heard yesterday.
Please share this post, particularly with anyone based in Newham!
Yesterday evening marked the Official Opening of the new Mary Ward Centre building.

This event was more than a celebration; it was a powerful testament to the transformative impact of education and support offered here at Mary Ward Adult Education , Blackfriars Settlement and Mary Ward Legal Centre. Together, we forge ahead, empowering lives and fostering a future for all.
'I’m proud to attend the opening of this new centre and hear about the difference City Hall’s investment will be making to Londoners, through Mary Ward’s work in Stratford and beyond.' - Deputy Mayor Jules Pipe eloquently stated, envisioning a city where all Londoners can access incredible opportunities #GLA Greater London Authority
