Charity Climb for The Woodland Trust🏃➡️🗻 We couldn't resist the urge to take on the National Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. 😮 We are incredibly excited to share that 12 members from Maydencroft will be participating in support of the Woodland Trust, which will take place in only two weeks on Monday, 16th September 2024. 🌳 Some of the team members taking part include Tom Williams Luke Allwright Nick Seller James Jeffery and Kurt Langley As a company that deeply cares about our environment, protecting and preserving our natural spaces is essential for future generations. Another productive day with the Maydencroft Forestry team at a Royal Forestry Society meeting. 🪵 Georgia Harvey, Assistant Forestry Consultant, provided an update on a meeting with Woodhouse Farm Partners, who kindly hosted this RFS meeting. “The meeting provided a delightful opportunity to walk around their woodlands, led by owners Robin Hart and Susie Williams. Maydencroft has been supporting the woodland management at the site for many years, and it was one of the first woodlands Rik Pakenham started working with as a Forester. The high number of attendees meant that many lively debates and discussions were had throughout the day, including the hot topic of pest control, such as deer and squirrel management, the possibility of agroforestry, and the highs and lows of woodland creation projects. The wide range of personnel and expertise present at the meeting allowed for a number of different points of view on how best to manage woodlands to be heard. This, in turn, opened the floor to some very interesting discussions that were met with both agreement and some conflicting opinions, which is always beneficial. Step by step 👷🏻♂️ Thanks to the refurbishment of 300 steps, access to Box Hill, an iconic landmark in the Surrey Hills National Landscape has been vastly improved. “We undertook the work over three months. The challenging location of the steps meant much of the construction had to be done by hand rather than machinery, with materials carried to the site daily by a team of workers. One of the innovative solutions we implemented was installing a floating pontoon across the River Mole. This unique approach allowed us to efficiently transport materials to the site, as you may have seen in earlier news updates. The new steps have been constructed using around 15 tonnes of recycled plastic manufactured from 7,731,360 milk bottle tops. This hardwearing material was chosen due to its longevity, helping to reduce future maintenance costs, preventing plastic from going into landfills and preventing the felling of trees for materials. If oak boards had been used instead of recycled plastic, five oak trees would have been felled.” Said Michael Comlay, Contracts Manager from the Landscape & Environment team.
