Volunteering as a mentor is incredibly rewarding but misconceptions often hold people back. Breaking through these barriers can bring life-changing benefits to both you and the young person you mentor. A common misconception is that people feel they don't have the right qualifications or experience to become a volunteer mentor. But everyone has something to offer. Our mentors come from all walks of life, many with no previous experience of working with young people. What our mentors have in common is that they care and want to make a difference. They have a shared desire to be a supportive adult who takes an interest in the life and education of their young person. You can change a life. What's stopping you? Supporting young people in the UK has never been more important. Through no fault of their own, care-experienced and young people facing challenges are affected by a significant gap in outcomes compared to their peers. They aren’t reaching their potential—but mentoring can change that. Just one hour a week with a consistent, caring adult can boost confidence, academic performance and open doors to a brighter future. You can change a life. What’s stopping you? MCR Pathways Coordinator at Barnwell School

Like my mentors, there are times where I sit and wonder how much difference I'm making to my students, and how much they actually want me to be part of their time at school - imposter syndrome gets us all! However, the last week of term gave me some shining examples of the part I have played in the lives of my students, which I can fondly look back on whenever I am doubting myself... * EMILY * First up is Emily, who joined Barnwell part way through year 7. It's safe to say that she didn't have the easiest time adjusting to Barnwell life, and we hoped that joining group work would be the support she needed. And indeed it was. Over the last year and a half, Emily and I built up such a strong, trusting relationship, filled with lots of laughs and some worryingly competitive Uno matches! The growth in confidence, resilience, and joy I witnessed in Emily, along with improvements in her behaviour and lesson attendance (despite everything she had going on), was incredibly heartwarming and filled me with pride. Last Friday was Emily's final day at Barnwell, and she chose to spend some of her final morning with me. We played some classic rounds of Uno, shared memories, and had a giggle. Emily even wrote me the most beautiful thank you card, which I can't share simply because I haven't yet managed to read it without tearing up! * MATTHEW * And then we have Matthew. He was due to leave school last year but, unhappy with his GCSE results, he decided he didn't want to leave Barnwell on a negative note. With my support and encouragement, he signed up for a year long programme at Barnwell, which would help him progress to the next stage of academic life. Matthew was rematched with his previous mentor, and they continued to build their relationship, primarily through competitive chess and card game tournaments. Matthew was always a reserved young man, but he began pushing himself out of his comfort zone and asking for help when he needed it, coming further out of his shell as the months passed. Matthew just needed people to invest some time in him, and he really turned it around, achieving everything he set out to do at the end of year 11 and then some. I know I speak for both myself and his mentor when I say how proud we are of him, and Matthew wrote each of us a thank you card to express his gratitude for everything we had done for him. You really can't underestimate the impact that just one caring, invested adult can have on a young person. If you want to be part of a journey like the ones above, please sign up to be a mentor today. If I can make a difference, so can you!
