We asked our site teams to get snapping our rigs in action earlier this week. This is a small selection of what we received – showcasing the range of our techniques across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. Enjoy!

Work is progressing fine at a Winvic Construction Ltd site near Sittingbourne, where we are installing nearly 16,000 Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs) over a c.80,000 m² area to support two new warehouse units as well as their service yards and sprinkler tanks. Columns are being embedded into firm-stiff London Clay at 10 metres below ground level, to treat a very soft clayey alluvium layer. Bi-Modulus Columns (BMCs) i.e. concrete columns topped with a Vibro Stone Column (VSC) head are being installed not only beneath a soft tarmac surrounding the buildings to form a transition area, but also in some parts of the service yards to allow for later excavation where drains will be running. To tackle the challenges posed by this tremendous site, Wayne Talbot our Supervisor and the rest of the site team have unleashed the full power of not less than three LRB 23 rigs, allowing good progress with the CMC installations. Consequently, the scheme is on track to be completed comfortably within programme.

Menard UK is very pleased to announce that we have won the award for “UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1M and £3M” at this year’s GE awards. The award was given for our recent ground improvement works at Horwich – Rivington Chase Link Road where Menard designed and installed a multi-technique solution including Dynamic Replacement, Pre-Fabricated Vertical Drains and Controlled Modulus Columns to support a new road construction. The challenging site runs over variable depths of made ground underlain by substantial thicknesses of peat. Compared to more traditional methods such as dig out and replace or a piled embankment, the ground improvement solution provided a financially viable option which also came with substantial programme and carbon savings. The works were carried out in collaboration with D Morgan plc who is acting as principal contractor for the works whilst also undertaking the major construction elements including earthworks, drainage and road construction. Early collaboration with D Morgan Plc and the geotechnical engineer for the scheme E3P meant an innovative solution could be put in place from an early stage. The judges said “A range of techniques and an innovative ground improvement solution resulted in improved sustainability credentials for the scheme. The restrictive working environment required clear planning of works and management of H&S. There was also proactive community engagement with the council and local university.” Congratulations to the team and thank you to all those involved with the project for your support and collaboration. #geawards2024 #groundimprovement

Our Works Manager Lee Durrant has barely stopped since joining Menard a year ago! He is regularly out and about visiting our numerous site teams as they work hard on our ground improvement sites. We haven't really had time to draw a breath over the last year with a full to bursting programme of work. This is thanks to our technical & estimating staff who bring in the contracts, and then credit to our operational & support staff to get the jobs underway, and of course a big acknowledgement to our site teams who are out in all weathers toiling away to install our various types of ground improvement elements. We continue to be busy with a full order book for the foreseeable future and are looking forward to a well earned rest around Christmas time!

    Enjoying being busy

So just wanted to clear something up, I haven’t changed jobs just the company name lol. In fact I have just celebrated my 1 year anniversary at Menard UK as works manager. I have to say what a year it has been. So many challenges and I’ve enjoyed getting stuck in to all of them. But I have to say one of my more enjoyable tasks has been going around meeting all the hard working men within the company and agency staff that support us. Thanks to a great company ethos I have been able to spend some time outside of work and take the lads out for an occasional meal. Not made it to everyone yet but I’ll get there. We are extremely busy at the moment but taking time to get to know the men has been time well spent. We have a good bunch of hardworking men, who are well supported by agency staff. A big thanks to Acero Construction UK Ltd , Foundation Personnel Limited , Piling Recruitment Group and Daniel Piling Ops for all your support over my first year. We have a full order book and are pushing forward so hopping to have many more challenges in the future.

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Auditel into our Burscough office to deliver a very informative workshop on the topic of Carbon Management. As a business, we have been striving to reduce our carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and in the period of 2022 - 2023, we reduced our total carbon emissions by an impressive 16% across Scopes 1,2, and 3 - this demonstrates that the decisions we are making today will enable us to reach our targets of the future. We will be working closely with Auditel who will support us through our journey towards attaining ISO 14064 and PAS 2080 certification. Achieving certification in both of these standards will greatly assist in our carbon reduction efforts and demonstrate to our clients that Menard is a business which continuously endeavours to deliver a high-quality service and has sustainability at the core of its operating philosophy.    If you would like to find out how we can help support carbon reduction through our innovative ground improvement solutions, then please do not hesitate to contact us via our central e-mail address: [email protected] #sustainable solutions #carbonfootprintreduction

Derby – A Hot Spot for Ground Improvement   Menard UK has recently completed another successful Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) project in Derby with columns installed to support a large new cold store warehouse working to tight tolerances beneath a high bay warehouse. The CMC solution was proposed to limit settlements to 25mm beneath both foundations and ground floor slabs with differential settlements limited to 1/500 in general slab areas and 1/2000 in the high bay racking area. 9,500no. CMCs were installed over a period of 7 weeks with 3no. CMC rigs.   The equipment has now moved to the other side of Derby to our next CMC project for another large warehouse installing over 7,000no. CMCs beneath foundations and ground floor slabs.   These schemes are the latest of several successful ground improvement schemes in the Derby area over the past 3-4 years. A total of 16no. structures are now completed or in construction utilising Menard’s ground improvement techniques including warehousing, housing, tanks and new college buildings with multiple techniques such as CMCs, Dynamic Replacement and Vibro Stone Columns.   With plenty more schemes planned in the area and a very good understanding of the local soils and suppliers, we look forward to delivering more successful projects for our clients in the coming months and years.     Menard UK is available to assist with any enquiries or questions regarding Ground Improvement. We received some great feedback after our Southern Team held a BBQ and litter pick last Friday – well done guys! “Thought you may like to see a post I posted on my local Facebook group today about the wonderful staff from your company.   As a grumpy old guy who always assumes the worst in people it was good to have those assumptions proved wrong today! Walked through Crabtree Park with the dog on the way to Hawley Meadows and saw a group of about a dozen or so young guys having a BBQ at one of the tables. I expected to return to see a load of mess and rubbish everywhere but the complete opposite! They had tidied away all their lunch stuff and were all walking around with litter picking sticks and bags collecting rubbish from the whole park, in the bushes, round the benches, everywhere!! I asked one of the guys and said they work over at Watchmoor Park for a company called Menard and their director gave them the afternoon off to have a BBQ as long as they cleared the whole park after! Wonderful to see and well done that company and their responsible employees. " Big congratulations to the staff at the Camberley site.
