Developing new ways to help people have conversations about mental health.

About us

Mental Health Innovations (MHI) is an independent charity whose primary purpose is to research, develop and deliver technology innovations in mental health. The intention is to invest in innovations which have been co created by the ultimate users of the technology, in partnership with experts from the mental health and technology sectors. The development of new technologies is expensive and out of the reach of most charities. MHI will work to make new technologies available to organisations across the sector. MHI was established in November 2017 with a substantial grant from The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. In May 2018, MHI began piloting its first service, Shout, a 24/7 digital mental health text line for people in crisis. The service is available for anyone, anytime, anywhere. Trained volunteers, supervised by a highly skilled clinical team, respond immediately to people in crisis via SMS and instant messaging. Our volunteers and clinical teams all work remotely through the online platform, enabling us to recruit staff and volunteers from across the country. More information about Shout can be found on the web at www.giveusashout.org, on Instagram at @GiveUsAShoutInsta and on Twitter on @GiveUsAShout.

At Mental Health Innovations, we very much welcome the Government's new ambition to raise the healthiest generation of children in our history, with early intervention at the heart of that mission. Through our Shout UK text messaging support service, we have now taken more than 2.5 million conversations with people across the UK who were struggling with their mental health. 62% of those texters were under the age of 25. Independent research estimates that Shout has saved the lives of hundreds of young people, and we have improved the mental health and wellbeing of many hundreds of thousands more. Shout is free, confidential, accessible through SMS with no need for a broadband connection and anonymous, making it a highly accessible means of mental health support through early intervention. Our trained volunteers give texters a good experience of reaching out for support, that will lead them to positive help seeking behaviours in the future, diverting them from crisis. There can be no greater importance than supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our children and young people. We look forward to working with the Government and playing our part in delivering the Shout service, alongside developing new services that can operate digitally to provide the scale of support that is needed to tackle the increasing levels of demand for mental health support across the UK. We would like to say a big thank you to The Clothworkers' Foundation for their generous grant. Through the Shout UK text messaging service we are able to support the mental health of hundreds of thousands of children, young people and adults every year, by harnessing the power of a digital platform. This grant will help us fund the continual improvement of Shout's technology, so that we can better the user experience for our deserving texters. We are very grateful.

Mental Health Innovations and Cloudwick Help Save Lives Using AWS Mental Health Innovations operates Shout, the UK’s first free, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone struggling to cope with mental health issues. Launched in 2018, Shout has had more than 2 million text conversations with people seeking support because they are feeling anxious, stressed, depressed, suicidal, or overwhelmed. With 2,500 active volunteers and 1,500–2,000 conversations every day, MHI has a longer-term aim to develop other mental health services With its data organized in silos, MHI needed a holistic platform to generate business intelligence to improve its services, and to provide mental health data insights to academic researchers. “We’ve been generating a lot of data since 2018, but wanted to boost our ability to capitalize on the data in terms of insights,” says Mark Ungless, director of data insights at MHI. “We needed a robust data environment where we could do all the types of analyses we needed.” That’s where Cloudwick and Amazon Web Services (AWS) came in. Working remotely because of the COVID-19 restrictions, Cloudwick conducted a discovery exercise to assess MHI’s technology needs, especially its need for data security, privacy, and governance. Cloudwick then delivered an MHI-specific pilot of its Amorphic Data Cloud solution for self-service on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Amorphic seamlessly integrates with and orchestrates more than 72 AWS services, making it possible for users to manage their AWS data and analytics workloads from a single self-service interface. #mentalhealthawareness #aws #awscommunity https://lnkd.in/gU37cMac

We are delighted to be building on our relationship with Institute of Global Health Innovation (IGHI) by embarking on a two-year research project. This will see the publication of four observatory reports over a twenty-four month period, that can be used to guide policy and practice. IGHI will be conducting research and summarising evidence to inform policymakers, external stakeholders and the general public as they work with us to understand how to make the best use of digital interventions in mental health. The first report will focus on the availability and accessibility of mental health services in the UK. IGHI's expertise in service user and public involvement will form a key element of this phase of our partnership through the creation of a diverse Service User Voice Group, which will ensure that Shout users and public member voices are heard, both through the improvement of the Shout service and the identification and development of research topics. The Group will meet regularly over the course of the two years, inputting to the observatory reports, feeding in a public voice to Shout’s decision-making boards and putting lived experience at the heart of everything we do. Our Head of Psychology, Research and Commissioned Training, Dr Ariele Noble, gave a seminar this week to Bloomberg LP about how to protect Maternal Mental Health. Ariele discussed the corporate challenges and obstacles that can impact maternal mental health and advised how they can be overcome, talking through the eight dimensions of self-care. The session promoted much healthy discussion as well as creating a sense of community for the attendees. We were delighted to receive feedback that all Bloomberg participants found the seminar extremely insightful and that it gave them food for thought on how to improve their wellbeing.
