Mental Health Care

A charity using pioneering technology to improve mental health in the UK

About us

Mental Health Innovations (MHI) is an independent charity whose primary purpose is to research, develop and deliver technology innovations in mental health. The intention is to invest in innovations which have been co created by the ultimate users of the technology, in partnership with experts from the mental health and technology sectors. The development of new technologies is expensive and out of the reach of most charities. MHI will work to make new technologies available to organisations across the sector. MHI was established in November 2017 with a substantial grant from The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. In May 2018, MHI began piloting its first service, Shout, a 24/7 digital mental health text line for people in crisis. The service is available for anyone, anytime, anywhere. Trained volunteers, supervised by a highly skilled clinical team, respond immediately to people in crisis via SMS and instant messaging. Our volunteers and clinical teams all work remotely through the online platform, enabling us to recruit staff and volunteers from across the country. More information about Shout can be found on the web at www.giveusashout.org, on Instagram at @GiveUsAShoutInsta and on Twitter on @GiveUsAShout.

Join Shout Clinical Director Sarah Kendrick and two of our Shout Volunteers on #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, Tuesday 10 September at 12pm to learn how you can support someone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts. The theme of World Suicide Prevention Day this year is ‘Changing the narrative around suicide’, so we’re going to set about changing the part of the old narrative that says suicide shouldn’t be talked about. Because talking about suicide is how we help prevent it. Sign up: https://lnkd.in/etC9afNX

After a dramatic increase in the cost of living since 2021, the Shout service has seen a rise in the number of people texting in with issues related to cost of living. Our report into the toll money worries are having on mental health found that in over a third of conversations related to the cost of living crisis, Shout texters talked about the deep sense of loneliness they were feeling. Some texters felt they had no one to turn to for support and financial advice. Others felt embarrassed and ashamed to talk about their finances with friends and relatives, many of whom referred to Shout as their outlet to vent and offload their anxious thoughts and feelings. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/enhHePH4 With thanks to our partners and funders Aviva Foundation (Aviva), Cadent Gas Limited and IE Hub for their support which allows us to continue our vital work.

    • Half of Shout texters who have financial difficulties experience stress and worry and 36% struggle with suicidal ideation.

We were delighted to welcome employees from our partner, Selfridges, into our offices on Tuesday to showcase the work of our community of volunteers. The team helped us with a volunteer engagement exercise, before taking part in a well-being workshop with our Head of Research Psychology Dr Ariele Noble. Thank you to everyone who attended, and a huge thank you to Selfridges for your continued support! If your organisation would be interested in working with us, find out more about what that could look like here: https://lnkd.in/eesF7ygz

We are excited to announce that we are taking the move to merge our partner charity The Mix, with Mental Health Innovations, in order to strengthen our early intervention offer for young people. It has always been our charity’s ambition to expand the reach of support we can give to people across the UK through provision of digital products and services and this merger is an important and significant step towards delivery of our mission. The Mix Charity is a digital charity for under 25s, with whom we’ve partnered since Shout UK’s launch in 2018. They provide a holistic service of free advice, information and support, reaching over five million young people online each year via social media, web content, peer support and counselling services. They deliver their work with the help of experts and more than 1,000 young people in co-design, volunteering and governance roles. Mental Health Innovations’ pathway for young people will expand to focus on early intervention through an online support community, discussion boards and online resources, augmenting Shout’s 24/7 text messaging support, which operates for people of all ages. We will be able to offer more volunteering opportunities that enable young people to directly contribute to supporting their peers. We also plan to develop a series of exciting new products including self-paced learning modules, single-session counselling interventions, growth of the chatbot offering and peer led 121 interventions. These will be co-created with our community of young people. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eq7JfzU8

Farming in Britain demands a special kind of resilience. It is tough physical work and it can be even tougher on mental health, so we’ve launched a new partnership to support British farmers, thanks to funding from Hawkstone. Virtually all UK farmers (95%) under the age of 40 rank poor mental health as one of the biggest hidden problems facing the industry (Farm Safety Foundation, 2021). They face unique challenges, particularly during demanding periods like harvest season. The partnership is supported by Hawkstone creator Jeremy Clarkson and farmer Kaleb Cooper, to tackle the hidden problem of mental health in the farming community. “Farming is an incredibly hard job and there are statistics out there to show that mental health challenges in farming have risen in recent years. Some people don’t like talking about their problems face-to-face or find it difficult to open up to someone they know, so we have teamed up with Shout to allow farmers to send a simple text and get the support they need.” - Kaleb

The livery company and charity commission bespoke access to the Shout UK service for their members, who encompass individuals and businesses from the UK furnishing industry.
