It has been deeply shocking and upsetting to witness the scale of the attacks over the weekend on hotels housing vulnerable people seeking asylum. We continue to support community of LGBTQI refugees and people seeking asylum during this time. Thank you to all of our allies and supporters who have sent messages of support. We know that this violence and thuggery is not representative of the British public as a whole.

About us
Micro Rainbow’s vision is to create a world where lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) people are safe, free from discrimination, persecution and have equal opportunities in life, including in accessing employment, training, financial services and housing. Our mission is to create opportunities for LGBTQI people to fulfil their potential in life and create innovative models for social change that are sustainable, scalable and replicable. Our objectives are: - to provide safe housing to LGBTQI asylum seekers and refugees - to facilitate access to employment, volunteering, training and education for LGBTQI refugees - to research and better understand the specific issues faced LGBTQI asylum seekers and refugees and to make recommendations that improve their lives. Our core beliefs are: - many LGBTQI people across the world are more vulnerable to poverty and isolated because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity or intersex status. When they come to the UK to seek safety they still face homelessness and discrimination. - LGBTQI people who are homeless and trapped in poverty can break the poverty cycle if they are given the opportunity. - addressing homelessness and poverty contribute to creating new narratives that change social attitudes towards refugees and LGBTQI people Our principles: - we provide hope and additional resources, but not charity; - we do not persuade or motivate people to help themselves; - we speak, consult and research with local communities, continuously; - we work in partnership or not at all; - we understand that social change takes time, and that is ok; - we maximise and make full use of existing resources whenever possible; - we believe that professionalism, efficiency, financial health and changing the world can go together. Big numbers look good and we hope to achieve them, however everyone that works with us is important to us and our focus is in changing people’s lives, one at a time.

#LesbianVisibilityWeek might happen once a year (in April), but at Micro Rainbow, we celebrate the #lesbians in our community of refugees and people seeking asylum all year round! Read Queen's piece to learn about her journey from #Nigeria, where being a lesbian is illegal, to finding safety and her community in the UK. https://lnkd.in/eSzzT6AR

It's another #FeelgoodFriday in the Micro Rainbow office! We are so happy to welcome Salma, a lesbian from Bangladesh, into her new home! She has never lived openly as a lesbian before - now she lives with other people who are part of the #LGBTQI community, she has the freedom to start to embrace it in a safe and welcoming space. The incredible support of our allies means that we are able to ensure that people like Salma have everything they need when they move into one of our safe houses. Want to help? We have been working with EUSA - the Academic Internship Experts - for a number of years. We are lucky enough to work with interns supplied through this programme twice a year. They bring many benefits to our work - a youthful and fresh perspective on LGBTQI issues and a keen willingness to learn about the LGBTQI refugee and asylum seeker experience in the UK. Thank you for the invitation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the programme!

July 30th is #FriendshipDay! Everyone in the world needs and gains support from friendships. But, all too often, #LGBTQI refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK face loneliness and isolation. They are rejected by their families and communities, even once they reach the UK. Former friends may reject them once they find out they are LGBTQI, making an already difficult asylum process even more difficult. Micro Rainbow's social inclusion programme plays a key role in helping isolated #LGBTQI #AsylumSeekers and #refugees make connections and form new friendships. Through a regular programme of events and activities, members of our community are able to meet and socialise, and form new networks of of support - in the picture, community members have been taking part in a cookery class together. Did you know that 46% of the people we supported in 2023 were under the age of 30? Khojimat is one of those young people. It is illegal to be LGBT in his home country. In this piece on the website, talks about what it has been like for him to claim asylum as a young #LGBTQI person. He came to the UK from Uzbekistan when he was just 17, and claimed asylum not long after. He accessed Micro Rainbow's Moving On programme to help him get ready for studying or working once he got his status - which came through a few weeks ago! The Moving On team is running a hospitality-focussed #employability workshop with members of our community today! Facilitated by Tao Group Hospitality in a world class restaurant in central London, it will help attendees gain the skills they need to work in the food and drink sector in the UK. Workshops like these help the #LGBTQI #refugees we support regain confidence and gain new transferrable skills. Want to learn more about the impact these sorts of workshops can have?
