Our Spring Team Training workshop was all about bat emergence surveys, making sure we are up to date with recent changes to survey guidance. We focused not only on providing top quality data, analysis and reports, but also on how to lead a survey safely and efficiently. We’ve had a very busy April and May supporting clients with #GreatCrestedNewt surveys, with the whole team out taking part in eDNA and population size class assessments. This species has legal protection due to significant population declines. The survey season is short and early consultation with a professional ecologist is key to avoiding programme delays. #TeamMortimer have had an interesting week checking on our reptile survey sites where we discovered both slow worms and common lizards. While some were out basking in a rare glimpse of sunshine, one juvenile lizard was found actively foraging. Each observation helps us better understand the habitats and behaviours of the reptiles on our sites and ensure their protection and conservation. #ReptileSurvey #WildlifeConservation #EcologicalSurvey #ConservationInAction

I have been leading on crayfish habitat surveys on a range of our watercourses along HS2. Knowing that there is a presence of American Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) further upstream, and with invasive non-native species management at the forefront of my mind, I have been evaluating the suitability of our watercourses on site. I have been leading a team of ecologists to quantify the suitability of our streams for non-native crayfish populations, to allow me to pinpoint areas of habitat which may require further survey work later in the season. It was good to practice my aquatic invertebrates species identification whilst getting my feet wet, and if was good news for our water quality when I found an established population of caddisfly larvae in our streams.

Yesterday Alison Barnett PhD MIEnvSc had the pleasure of visiting the University of East Anglia to attend their Environmental Sciences careers fair, alongside representatives from the Environment Agency, ERM, Natural England, Norfolk Wildlife Trust and NORFOLK RIVERS TRUST. We had some great discussions with students from several disciplines as well as other UEA alumni. Landscape-scale planning for both biodiversity and human health seem to be hot topics for future grads. Yesterday, #TeamMortimer had the privilege of attending the RSK Biocensus Suppliers Day. It was an excellent opportunity to connect with other professionals in our field, allowing for great discussions and exchanges throughout the day. The range of talks presented were very engaging, and covered a broad spectrum of topics from the intricate details of eDNA metabarcoding to the practical applications of GIS in ecology. Each presentation offered valuable insights, showcasing the depth and diversity within our field. We consider ourselves fortunate to have been a part of such a gathering and are excited for seeing everyone again next year.
