About us

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian aid organisation. We save peoples' lives in conflict zones, epidemics and natural disasters. Independence, neutrality and impartiality are at the core of everything we do. Our network of medics, logistical professionals and administrative staff spans more than 70 countries. Our medical teams carry out more than nine million patient consultations a year. Our activities run from vaccination campaigns to complex surgery in war zones. From building hospitals to recruiting local teams, our non-medical staff make sure our field projects run smoothly, no matter what happens. And in our 26 headquarter offices around the globe, we fundraise, communicate and advocate on behalf of our patients. All of our income in the UK comes from private donations. Eighty-nine percent goes to our medical projects. Only one percent is spent on administration and staff costs. The rest we reinvest in fundraising. Our independent funding means we can act rapidly; we don’t need to wait for governments or other institutions to send us funds. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, we treated our first patients within minutes as we were already on the ground. We work to help people in the greatest need, wherever and whenever they need it. This will always be what motivates us.

  • ⚠️At our mobile clinic at Wethersfield, run in partnership with Doctors of the World UK - part of Medecins du Monde International, we are often told by the men staying there that the site feels like a prison. The use of de facto detention centres must be abandoned. We have seen the devastating medical consequences of the use of containment sites on the Greek islands and Nauru, where MSF teams have treated hundreds of people for serious mental and physical health conditions resulting from their containment. ▶️Watch: https://lnkd.in/eDihCUv7

  • 📢🙌 Vaccinations save lives! 🙌📢 This National immunisation awareness month, we're raising awareness of the importance of routine vaccinations 💉   Dr Neal Russell, a paediatric doctor and public health specialist advisor, has recently returned from Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There, he saw simultaneous outbreaks of cholera and measles among people displaced by conflict. These are vaccine-preventable diseases of which children are often the main victims. Getting children vaccinated can save many lives 💉 As an independent organisation that doesn’t take funding from governments, we are only able to deliver lifesaving medical care due to the generosity of those who give through private fundraising and donations. We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone at ShareGift and all those who contribute, for the generous support over the past 23 years.   ShareGift is a charitable organisation that accepts small shareholdings, arranges to sell them and donates the proceeds to charitable causes. By collecting and selling these shares, ShareGift allows shareholders to support causes they care about without incurring the usual costs associated with selling shares. Thank you to all those who have helped power our work by donating your small shareholdings through ShareGift and facilitating generous grants that help save lives!

  • 💡What would inspire you to become a humanitarian? Maybe supporting others through experiences similar to your own, serving your community, or relieving the pain of others? This #WorldHumanitarianDay we are sharing the experiences and motivations of some of our amazing colleagues. 🎊Join us in celebrating humanitarians worldwide. Akila Lengmuk Mutbis, a Nursing Team supervisor in Bauchi state, Nigeria, says “My role is integral to the seamless functioning of the healthcare team. My passion for MSF work stems from its unwavering commitment to providing exceptional patient care. The dedication to patient-centred care and the emphasis on teamwork. Being part of MSF is not just a job but a calling. It fuels my drive to contribute positively to the health and well-being of our community, knowing that every effort we make significantly impacts the lives of those we serve in Bauchi state.”

  • ❓ What is Mpox and what risks does it pose ❓ Mpox is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It is transmitted by close contact between individuals or with infected animals. It has been endemic in Central Africa (strain I) and West Africa (strain II) since the 1970s, and spread rapidly around the world in 2022-2023, with tens of thousands of cases linked to the West African variant reported in more than 110 countries. In practical terms, Mpox causes rashes, lesions, and pain, all of which require treatment to manage the symptoms as effectively as possible and avoid further complications. Most patients that are treated recover within a month, but the disease can be fatal if left untreated. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where the mortality rate for the strain is much higher than in West Africa, more than 479 people have died since the start of the year. By comparison, the WHO estimates that Mpox claimed the lives of 89 people worldwide in 2022. The Mpox epidemic in DRC has attracted international attention in the last month, following reports of a novel mutation in the virus and the notification of cases in certain sites for displaced persons in North Kivu. While Mpox is nothing new in DRC, the situation has worsened dramatically this year. The disease has now spread to neighboring countries like CAR, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya and has been found in at least 17 countries in Africa. Since June, MSF has launched interventions in several affected areas.

  • 🔴 Physical injuries, mental trauma and restricted access to medical care are an everyday reality for many Palestinians living in and around the West Bank city of Hebron. Our new report, Occupied Lives: The risk of forcible transfer of Palestinians in Hebron, details the rapidly deteriorating access to medical care for Palestinians in Hebron because of restrictions imposed by Israeli forces and violence perpetrated by Israeli soldiers and settlers. • 🔴 The last public hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, is at risk of closure. As fighting in the city escalates again, MSF-supported Saudi Hospital was hit during a bombardment on Sunday 11 August. “For more than three months, people in El Fasher have been under constant bombardment. Shelling from both sides has impacted on the city resulting in over 2,500 casualties arriving at MSF-supported hospitals and more than 370 of these patients passing away from their injuries. The number of victims of the conflict is unknown,” says Michel Olivier Lacharité, head of MSF’s emergency operations. “Sunday’s attack on Saudi hospital – which is the largest hospital in North Darfur state – makes it crystal clear that the warring parties are making no efforts to protect health facilities or the civilians inside them. Patients fear for their lives as a result of the relentless attacks."

  • 🔴 European policies to curb immigration are deadly. Ali fled the war in Sudan in April 2023, when he was just 19. Like thousands of others, he now faces the obstacles imposed by EU-funded Libyan coastguards, inhumane detention centres, and complicated asylum processes in Europe. These abusive policies exacerbate the suffering of vulnerable people and result in thousands of deaths in the Mediterranean Sea. What is the cost of outsourcing Europe's borders?
