Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay. Did you know that half of the nearly 7 million deaths due to #AirPollution are from cardiovascular conditions? Our new #WorldHeartReport warns that air quality levels have barely improved despite measures recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), causing nearly 1.9 million deaths from heart disease and almost a million from strokes each year. Key findings of the report include: 🔴 Heart disease deaths linked to air pollution have surged by up to 27% in some regions over the past decade. 🔴 Air pollution levels are nearly ten times higher than recommended in Southeast Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean. 🔴 Indoor air pollution poses a serious threat, exacerbated by energy efficiency measures in modern buildings. Heart disease (Atherosclerosis) is the plaque in your coronary arteries. A Heart Attack is when that plaque ruptures Causing a clot to form & block blood flow in the artery. /2 Heart 'Disease' does not kill people. Heart 'Attacks' however - Do. Blood clots suddenly block arteries Not plaque. /3 However.... The more plaque you have The greater the odds of a heart attack. In simple terms: "You can't die from a condition you don't have" /4 You must also remember that you can have a 'Lot' of plaque But it does not have to be causing an obstruction to the artery And therefore you will not have any symptoms. Think "30% blockages in all of your arteries" As opposed to a "90% blockage" in one small section. /5 The majority of people who die suddenly from heart disease Had plaque of <70% stenosis (Narrowing). They would have had no symptoms. /6 It is not that less obstructive plaque is more dangerous There is just likely to be more of it. More Plaque = Higher Risk. /7 This explains why so many people will die suddenly from a heart attack And yet have no symptoms prior. So to maximally decrease your risk You need to delay the onset of plaque build up to as late as possible in life. You do that by aggressively managing risk factors. /8 Always remember...
