Bangladesh Floods Update ⛑️ 4.5 Million have now been affected by floods triggered by heavy rain in eastern Bangladesh. Feni has been worst hit with rescue teams being deployed to help those stranded by the swollen rivers. Over the next 24 hours the Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre (FFWC) has stated with the rain continuing, water levels could rise further! Alert: Bangladesh hit by severe floods with 11 rivers exceeding the "danger level." 🌊 🔔 Approximately 3 million people have been impacted by the floods, which have submerged hundreds of homes, leaving many residents stranded on rooftops, according to the Disaster Management Ministry of Bangladesh. In recent months, heavy rains and landslides have resulted in hundreds of deaths, millions of displaced, and severely damaged infrastructure across South Asian subcontinent. 🌏 While flooding is common during the monsoon season, as of Thursday, Bangladesh’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre reported that water levels in 11 rivers have exceeded the "danger level." ⚠ Locals fear a humanitarian catastrophe looming with videos circulating on social media of residents navigating muddy waters in canoes and swimming with their belongings as floodwaters reach the roofs of their homes. In the particularly affected Feni district of Chattogram in southeast Bangladesh, ongoing rescue operations aim to evacuate those trapped in flooded homes and provide shelter to the displaced. Further rainfall is expected across eastern Bangladesh, with predictions ranging from 50 mm to 150 mm (2 to 6 inches) over the next three days. The people of Bangladesh need our support urgently. You’ll never believe what just happened! 😱 We built a wall that ended up saving over 3,000 lives. 🤲🏼 In Pakistan, walls have played a crucial role in protecting families during flood disasters, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure is often limited. After the devastating floods in 2010 and subsequent years, Muslim Aid began constructing protective walls, around homes and villages. 🏠 These walls are often built using mud, bricks, or other locally available materials and are designed to act as barriers against floodwaters. 🌊 In one notable instance, in the aftermath of the 2022 floods, which were among the worst in Pakistan's history, families in the Sindh and Balochistan regions requested our support in building homes and preventing future flood disasters. These walls, helped divert water flow and kept entire villages from being submerged. At Muslim Aid we look at the root cause of problems to effectively create lasting impact with your donations. ✅ The effectiveness of these walls lies in their simplicity and the communal effort involved in building them. Villagers often work together to erect these barriers quickly when flood warnings are issued, which can make the difference between safety and disaster. Such community-driven solutions highlight the importance of local knowledge and collective action in disaster management, especially in areas where government resources are stretched thin. This year, Muslim Aid is observing World Humanitarian Day 2024 with a heavy heart as we remember our Palestinian colleague, Eman Abu Saied, who was killed at the start of the horrific war on Gaza 🇵🇸💔. Eman Abu Saeid, killed in November 2023, worked for our partner Tamer and was active in helping children, teenagers and families across the Gaza Strip. Prior to her death, she was working on a project for children titled “The Magic of Seashells”, in which she took children to Gaza’s breathtaking beaches to collect seashells and talk about the history of their homeland. One of her favourite parts of her job was to see the glow on the faces of those she helped. It still breaks our hearts to know that Eman will never get to see the smiles of the children when they find their special seashell, or watch their eyes widen with amazement and hearts grow with Palestinian pride as she teaches them about Gaza’s rich history.
