NCS - National Citizen Service Trust

Yesterday we launched the first in a series of events with Shout Out UK where young people learned techniques to effectively engage with their community on the issues that matter most to them! Over 50 young people on an NCS away from home experience in Devon were the first to take part in the session designed to address issues around misinformation, political literacy, (online) safety, democratic engagement, and connecting young people with decision makers. We look forward to delivering more of these events in the coming months.

Meet Bethany Evans 💫 For the last 15 months, Beth has been a part of our Youth Advisory Board at NCS. Here is what she has to say as she reflects on her time on the NCS Youth Advisory Board: "I think youth voice is well embedded at NCS! They do an amazing job at implementing it and making sure it holds value and is used to influence decisions. My favourite memory of being on the YAB was the World Mental Health Day event in October 2023. It was just an amazing day, and I’m proud of myself for presenting in front of young people at the event." We're currently recruiting new Youth Advisory Board members in England. The role of the Youth Advisory Board is to amplify youth voice in NCS Trust’s work at a strategic level, where young people have more opportunity to positively influence key decisions. The board will also connect NCS Trust employees with young people to inform their work and understand the priorities and experiences of young people. #Hiring #YouthVoice

Last week our Chief Operating Officer, Amanda Best FRSA visited the Entrust Education away from home experience at Laches Wood Outdoor Ed Centre with Sir Gavin Williamson CBE MP. Amanda said: Tom, Elliot and Ella shared their NCS stories with me. They told me about friends they had made, new things they had learned and, importantly, the fun they had had (who doesn't love toasting a marshmallow on a Friday morning?). They shared the new skills they now have for their CV (things like team work and public speaking), how they overcame early nervousness to make new friends from different parts of the country...and how good the food was!"

When Kai left school with no GCSEs, he wasn’t sure what the next step would be, but after going on an NCS experience, gaining confidence, and finding the right path, his life turned around. He said: "For the first time I felt that someone had faith in me. The new mates I met led me away from the dangerous route I’d been heading. Earlier this month our Chief Operating Officer, Amanda Best FRSA and Board Member, Michael Livingston, visited an NCS away from home experience run by Charlton Athletic Community Trust at YHA Lee Valley. They had a fantastic day observing a money sense session led by Nathan Gilpin, watersports team challenges and young people connecting with new friends. A huge thank you to the staff, many of whom had previously been on NCS!

In the Times and on the Times Radio today, our Chair, Harris Bokhari OBE, talks about the need for a national focus on social cohesion and how NCS can support young people to become more active citizens and more connected with other young people from different backgrounds.
