We’re pleased to announce that the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero has approved our development consent order application for the Bramford to Twinstead Reinforcement, after an independent panel recommended that the application be approved ✅ ⚡ Since 2021, three rounds of public consultation have taken place to help shape the proposals, which will see around 27 km of existing overhead line removed and replaced with a mixture of new overhead line and underground cables in the Dedham Vale National Landscape and parts of the Stour Valley. 🚧 The plans also include supporting construction, maintenance and operational infrastructure, such as haul roads for construction traffic and cable sealing end compounds. Strengthening the network in this way resolves a capacity bottleneck and will help deliver cleaner, greener energy from where it is generated to where it is needed 💡 Read more ⤵️

Connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while making the energy system clean, fair, and affordable.
About us
National Grid lies at the heart of a transforming energy system. Our business areas play a vital role in connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while continually seeking ways to make the energy system clean, fair, and affordable. In the UK we own and develop the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales, taking electricity from where it’s generated to where it’s needed. National Grid Electricity Distribution delivers electricity to over 20 million people across homes and businesses in the Midlands, South West England, and South Wales. In the US, we own and operate electricity and natural gas networks, serving over 20 million people across New York State and Massachusetts. National Grid Ventures operates across the UK, Europe, and the US, developing, operating, and investing in large-scale clean energy infrastructure. National Grid Partners invests in entrepreneurs at the intersection of energy and emerging tech, with capital, resources, connections, and know-how.

In a wonderful start to the day, I received the official certificate awarded to our newest interconnector Viking Link, by the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™. Viking Link was awarded the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title of ‘The world’s longest land and subsea HVDC interconnector’ on-site back in June, and we now have a permanent home for our formal certificate here in Ventures House. Viking Link truly is an impressive feat of engineering, at 475 miles in length, the land and subsea interconnector between the UK and Denmark required millions of work hours and exceptional teamwork to bring to life. 2024 has been a great year for the project, with Viking Link also being awarded the ‘Project of the Year (Over £50m)’ category at the Construction News Awards, and the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Major Project Award for Sustainability 2024. With expectations to save approximately 600,000 tonnes of carbon emissions in its first year and power up to 2.5 million UK homes, Viking Link is a big step forward in our journey to net zero. Congratulations to the entire project team, our partners at Energinet, and all those involved in our award-winning interconnector. #VikingLink #engineering #interconnectors #netzero #UKEU Siemens Energy Balfour Beatty plc Prysmian Munck Gruppen a/s NKT Guinness World Records National Grid

It was a privilege to host senior representatives from Ofgem at our Shurton substation this week, including their Chair Mark McAllister, Akshay Kaul, Director General, Infrastructure, and Peter Bingham, Director of Systems Planning, Engineering & Technology. Once Hinkley Point C is completed, Shurton will connect the first new nuclear power station in a generation to the UK electricity network – connecting 6 million homes and businesses to low carbon energy. 🏠⚡ It was great to show them around the site and talk about our Hinkley Connection Project as well as some of our other vital projects in the surrounding area. Huge thanks to the teams at National Grid and Ofgem who helped to make this visit happen. We’re in a critical period of delivery to meet the government’s 2030 power sector decarbonisation target. We’re planning the work required in the second half of this decade, and later this year we’ll be submitting our business plan for 2026-31 to Ofgem. This price control will be crucial, as we’ll need to deliver multi billion pounds of investment so we can continue to connect clean, green and affordable energy to our network. 🤝We are committed to continuing to work together with Ofgem and wider industry to ensure we have the right regulatory frameworks in place in order for us to deliver our future network at the scale and pace needed for the energy transition.
