Nekton

Last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming scientists Tonti and Iru to University of Oxford, Begbroke Science Park as part of the Nekton / Maldives Zooplankton Knowledge Exchange, in collaboration with #MMRI. Knowledge Exchanges are vital to our Missions. National scientists, policy makers, and communities play a central role in marine science and ocean management. This ongoing collaboration with researchers in the Maldives has been foundational to the success of the Maldives Mission. During their time with us, Tonti and Iru worked with Nekton’s Nuria Rico Seijo, as well as senior taxonomist Marianne Wootton, on zooplankton identification. Their work will develop a future publication based on the samples collected during the 2022 Nekton Maldives Expedition. As part of our #OceanRising initiative, we're thrilled to share UNIQLO's launch of ocean-themed embroidery designs at RE.UNIQLO Studios. They were inspired by the experience of designer Pei-Wen Jin as an ‘Artist-At-Sea on board Schmidt Ocean Institute research vessel Falkor (too). Ocean Rising is an initiative by Nekton and Schmidt Ocean Institute that bridges #OceanScience and #culture to inspire ocean conservation. Starting this August, Pei-Wen’s designs will be available at 18 RE.UNIQLO Studios across Europe, with Asia following this autumn. The designs allow clothing to be personalised and prolonged with these marine-inspired patterns. Last week we were proud to be represented by Nina de Villiers at the European Coral Reef Symposium. During the Nekton #Maldives Mission, video transects were conducted so scientists could study fish assemblage at different depths. Nina presented research looking at the depth ranges of fish species from this mission. Thank you to the event organisers, and congratulations to Nina on her poster presentation. Students are one month into the Deep-Sea and Ocean Science Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). So we caught up on their progress this week! The course provides an introduction to life in the deep sea, covering a range of topics from physical and chemical characteristics of the deep ocean, to animal adaptations and behaviours. 🐟🔎 There are currently 👋 214 participants 🌍 across 22 different countries. Many of the participants are new to deep-sea science, and are enjoying learning how we can mitigate our impacts on the deep sea. On #CanadaDay we would like to recognise the work of Patrick Lahey, and his appointment to the Order of Canada. Patrick’s inspiration and extraordinary support of Nekton has been invaluable through all our missions around the world, from Bermuda to the Seychelles, the Maldives and the Midnight Zone expedition. As the Founder of Triton Submarines LLC, Patrick has been at the centre of advances in ocean exploration. His work has provided ocean scientists, filmmakers and explorers with safe and stable platforms to better understand our ocean. Immense congratulations to Patrick for his recognition and appointment to the Order of Canada and his continued leadership in submersible exploration of the ocean.

A seasoned marine biologist, Nuria has extensively studied zooplankton from the Iberian Peninsula to the Maldives and led important research on microplastics in the Weddell Sea. 🛳 Facing the challenges of a three-week journey into one of Earth’s most remote regions, Nuria’s expertise has been vital in managing our laboratories’ full science operations.
