New analysis: One in ten households need to install a heat pump during this Parliament to meet the UK’s climate obligations ➡️ Nesta’s comprehensive plan sets out roadmap for how new Government can decarbonise home heating ➡️ 3 million homes need to install heat pumps or other low-carbon heating during this Parliament ➡️ If enacted, the plan would save a typical household around £400 per year on energy bills when switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump Home heating is currently responsible for 14% of the UK’s carbon emissions - not far below their 1990s peak. Nesta's new plan sets out how to scale up the energy transition and get the UK back on track for net zero. Read the plan: https://lnkd.in/g_uCTkjH

The Delphi method - a research approach used to gather multiple expert views - could be an underutilised asset in policy development. As part of our UK 2040 Options project, we set out to draw on collective wisdom as we consider policy options to get the UK to a better place by 2040. The Delphi process helped us to draw on a wide range of expert perspectives, giving us a large funnel to filter the issues we're exploring - from net zero to education and health. A new blog by Ben Szreter, Esme Yates and Rachel Carter deep dives into this method and outlines why it could hold significant promise as a versatile tool for policymakers. https://bit.ly/46DlGc7

How can government services empower their workforce to drive positive change? Last month our Chief Practices Officer James Plunkett was joined by UCL Associate Professor Dan Honig to explore how we can improve public services through empowerment-oriented management. Drawing on insights from his new book Mission Driven Bureaucrats, Dan shared the three ingredients to unlocking better governance: 🌟 Allowing autonomy 🌟 Cultivating confidence 🌟 Creating connection between peers and purpose Don’t worry if you missed it, you can watch back on demand ⬇️ https://bit.ly/3Maw5CZ

📣 A new report by Nesta has found that having more than one heat pump running in a street won't audibly increase noise levels. We commissioned consultancy Apex Acoustics Ltd to report on the noise impact of multiple air source heat pumps in terraced and semi-detached housing areas. We found that multiple air source heat pumps do not typically generate noise levels that would be distinguishable from a nearby single air source heat pump installed within MCS guidelines. This is the case even if the heat pumps generated their top noise levels at full power all at the same time in a neighbourhood with the densest possible terraced housing. Read the report: https://bit.ly/3WwwXGq
Study: Street full of heat pumps makes 'almost no difference' to neighbourhood noise levels. Katy King. Charlotte Lee. Having more than one heat pump running in a street will not noticeably increase noise levels, Nesta study finds. The growth of low-carbon heating in the UK is too slow, and energy efficiency measures have been in decline. Energy bills have risen at a time when the UK should be moving towards ending fuel poverty. Home heating is currently responsible for 14% of the UK’s carbon emissions - not far below their 1990s peak. That’s why we’ve produced a comprehensive plan to scale up the energy transition and get the UK back on track for net zero. Nesta’s plan sets out the priorities the new Government should start working on in its first 100 days: https://bit.ly/3WsL5Ro
