I've done a lot of work on developing aspects of a school's curriculum, both in my role as a teacher and as a consultant. I've tried to map out how I would go about developing change that is both purposeful and realistic at the same time.
We have to start by looking at what is going on in the classroom - and people can get this so wrong unfortunately, which is why so many teachers are leaving. But if we can draw on the people in education who are getting this right, observing people with an open mind and as a way of supporting and developing practice (which all teachers want by the way), then we can really develop systems that work for the children and the staff. Observation of practice is not a tool that should be used to hold things over people.
And yes, I did put children first. At the end of the day, the reason we are here is for them. We are in the business of developing and supporting children to become good people, so whatever developments we are making they should be at the heart.
And yes, I also talk about staff. If we don't put things in place to support and develop our staff, then we cannot help the children we teach in the most positive way. School's won't run without the staff, and I'm including office staff, site managers, cleaners, dinner staff to name but a few of the roles that make schools work.
It's hugely important that you consider what you do with those observations that you make. How are you going to use it to develop your curriculum, teaching and learning or leadership? How are you going to measure the impact? How are you going to make it realistic and manageable?
In my experience, whilst its not always possible, it's on us as leaders to ensure that change is measured. Often its better to focus on a couple of smaller aspects to form a bigger picture, rather than several large areas.
What are your thoughts? Have I missed anything?
