Celebrate✨Inform ✨Inspire✨we picked up the baton from First 100 Years to continue to advance women in the law in the UK

About us

We are proud to continue the work of the www.First100Years.org.uk national campaign. The First 100 Years is a truly ground-breaking project charting and celebrating the journey of women in the legal profession. It is the UK's first digital museum dedicated to women in law. Launched in 2014, the five-year project began with the aim of creating an online library of 100 stories about women who have shaped the legal profession since the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 paved the way for women to become lawyers to present day. As support from all corners of the profession has grown, The First 100 Years has blossomed into an absolute celebration of women’s role in the profession, with an extensive programme of activities and events planned in the run-up to the centenary of the Act in 2019. Its legacy will be a deep understanding of the past combined with a celebration of today so as to ensure a strong, and equal, future for all women in the profession. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAKOR5CzCDg

  • ❓ ❓ 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 ❓ ❓ 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙖𝙮 𝙂𝙖𝙥: 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙧 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣? Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent poll on whether enough is being done to close the gender pay gap. With 136 votes, the results are telling: • 3% believe significant progress has been made. • 38% feel some progress has been made, but it's not enough. • 48% think the gap is still too wide. • 12% say it depends on the industry. These results highlight a clear consensus: while there has been some movement in the right direction, there is still much work to be done. The fact that nearly half of respondents feel the gap is still too wide suggests that existing measures may not be sufficient or consistent across all sectors. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻? The results suggest that many professionals believe the gender pay gap remains a significant issue, with progress either stalling or being unevenly distributed across industries. This perception can impact employee morale, retention, and the overall reputation of organisations. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱? Transparent Pay Practices: 𝘖𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺. The conversation around gender pay equality must continue, and it’s clear that more concerted efforts are needed to achieve true parity. I encourage everyone to keep advocating for change, whether through policy, practice, or dialogue. Let’s keep pushing for a workplace where everyone is valued equally, regardless of gender. #GenderPayGap #Equality #DiversityAndInclusion #WorkplaceEquity #Leadership #WomenInBusiness

Today, we remember Juliet Wheldon, who passed away on 2 September 2013. Not only was Juliet a fantastic lawyer 👩⚖️, but she also managed to bridge the gap between law and politics in a way far more accomplished than most. Her profound knowledge of these two sectors led to a tremendous career, marked by many legal firsts, which she took deftly in her stride. 🌉 Juliet was the first female Treasury Solicitor and Head of the Government Legal Service 🏛️ and the first female General Counsel to the Governor of the Bank of England 🏦. Her support for other women throughout her career made her achievements even more commendable. 👩👩👩 Born in 1950, Juliet attended Sherborne School for Girls 📚 and later achieved first-class honours in modern history from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She then took a law conversion course inspired by her interest in political and constitutional policy and was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn ⚖️. Juliet’s fascination with politics led her to pursue a career in Government Legal Services in 1976. Over the years, Juliet skillfully navigated various posts within both the Treasury Solicitor’s Department and the Law Officers’ Department, tackling issues such as the ‘cash for questions’ scandal 🤝 and the extradition of Chilean dictator General Pinochet ✈️. In July 2000, her appointment as Treasury Secretary made her the first woman to head the Government Legal Service and the youngest person appointed to the role in modern times. Juliet's insistence that those serving in Iraq be given assurances over the legality of their actions was particularly notable 🇮🇶. She was made a Dame in 2004 🎖️. Upon retiring, Juliet became Legal Adviser to the Governor of the Bank of England, once again a first for a woman, steering the Bank through much of the 2008 financial crisis 💹. Juliet is remembered for her eccentricities and excellence. Many fondly recall her preference for travelling by bicycle 🚲, even when a limo was available. In 2013, Juliet passed away, leaving behind a legacy as a true legal pioneer. 🌟👩⚖️💼 #JulietWheldon #LegalPioneer #WomenInLaw #LawAndPolitics #Inspiration #Trailblazer #Legacy #Commemoration #WomensHistory
