This week, we expect the first group of women to be released under the government’s early release plans to ease overcrowding in prisons. We have made a series of recommendations to officials to ensure women have access to the right support, including: 🟣ensuring pre-release support; 🟣services and support specifically designed to meet women’s needs, including safe and suitable housing; 🟣flexibility in the system to prevent recall to prison; 🟣and investing in community hubs local to women.  Read our full statement in response to these emergency measures coming into effect: https://bit.ly/4ec4UDu #SDS40 #WomenInPrison

What an invigorating legal toolkit launch event at Doughty Street Chambers last night! Thank you to everyone who came to connect, strategise and share ideas!💫 Thank you to the excellent panel: Maya Sikand KC, Kirsty Brimelow KC, Pippa Woodrow Janey Starling and of course, Charlie, who moved the audience to tears when she shared her recent experiences of pregnancy in prison. Shout out to Raimonda Krasninkeviciute and Camila for ensuring everything ran seamlessly. Inspiring evening at the launch of this toolkit Doughty Street Chambers Level Up UK. Fascinating panel of incredible people working to change the way the justice system responds to pregnant women, mothers, babies. I am travelling home feeling energised by the passion and commitment in the room but saddened and shocked by the beautifully articulated story of lived experience and the data (10% of pregnant women in prison give birth in-cell or on the way to hospital. Women in prison are seven times more likely to suffer a stillbirth). Delighted that #HopeStreet can offer a compassionate alternative.
