Introducing Food 4 Thought, a brand new event by Only A Pavement Away: Providing support for those facing homelessness, hunger and food insecurity, we’ve teamed up with 5 amazing hospitality operators to provide meals for our charity partners this autumn. Read more about the inaugural #Food4Thought below, which would not be possible without the support and generosity of Brakes UK. Thanks to their offer to produce and deliver the meals at cost, we can provide 500 meals to those in need on #WorldHomelessDay. Connecting people facing homelessness to careers in hospitality
About us
ONLY A PAVEMENT AWAY is a charity founded by representatives from the hospitality industry. We support people facing or experiencing homelessness to overcome hurdles by finding jobs within the hospitality, pub and restaurant industry. We are not a recruitment agency and solely focus on helping those on the project find work. Outside of the moral benefits, the project is underpinned by a strong commercial and financial benefit to the hospitality, pub & restaurant industry whilst reducing the ever increasing strain on funding required for those who find themselves in such extreme circumstances. Homeless charity, Crisis, have worked with us from the very beginning to ensure that the standards required to help someone return to work are adhered to and are in no way compromised. For those who are on the project but are not/ nor are in danger of being homeless or sleeping rough then the same high standards apply. The funds raised by ONLY A PAVEMENT AWAY will be used to support those returning to work, supplement the resources required by the charities/associations to manage the project and promote the jobs available.

It's great to see Claire Allen's epic adventure get the recognition it deserves, and we can't wait for the JustGiving Awards in September where she's nominated for Endurance Fundraiser of the Year. She's now within touching distance of her fundraising target, check out our comments to help get her over the line! You can read more about Claire's story at BBC News below:

Today, I had the privilege of speaking to 60 men at HMP ISIS. The talent, eagerness to learn, and open-mindedness towards opportunities upon release were truly heartwarming. It was inspiring to see their excitement as we shared stories, laughed together, and found common ground in envisioning what their future could look like. The early release scheme is certainly putting pressure on the rehabilitation programs at HMPs, but I'm confident that by working together, we can achieve some superstar successes. It's not often that one gets excited about prison, but the incredible efforts being made at HMP ISIS encourage me to push even harder for more opportunities within the hospitality industry. I can't wait to see employers tap into the immense talent pool at HMP ISIS. If you want to learn more about how we can work together please drop me a message or email me at [email protected] Martha Morey New Futures Network HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) Only A Pavement Away

Recently, we visited HMP Styal, a women’s prison in Greater Manchester, with Sixty Eight People. Meeting eight women, the team shared their experiences of the hospitality industry and learnt about the skills needed to find work within it. From CV writing to interview techniques, the workshop was aimed at easing the transition into work post prison. It was their first time visiting a prison and Abi Dunn was so moved by the experience she has written a blog. To increase awareness and adoption of the hospitality sector amongst prison leavers we’re taking part in New Futures Network's initiative Unlocking Hospitality this October. Hosted in prisons across the country, we’ll be introducing people to the wonderful opportunities our industry has to offer when they’re released, and showing our employers the talent and potential that prison leavers have in spades. Gaucho have been one of our key employment partners since we began in 2018. From attending volunteering days & fundraising events to hiring our amazing members, they show solidarity to our charity in so many ways. Since 2019, they have hired 10 of our members who have served a cumulative amount of 19 years! 8 of these hires are still there and work in various roles from head office to the floor, and across locations from London to Birmingham. Sophie Canning, Head of Talent and Development, details the story of one prison leaver who joined Gaucho as a Commis Chef and stayed for 3 years. What a busy month or so we have had at Rare Restaurants volunteering with Only A Pavement Away's Fill A Flask campaign! Restaurant teams from all across the country volunteered in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and London at local hostels, serving food and drinks to those in need, harvesting veg in community allotments, giving out food donations and even watching community music performances. Finally our very own CEO Martin Williams took time out of his busy day to volunteer, serving guests at Only A Pavement Away's Punt & Dine hospitality event to raise money for the homeless. Supporting our charity partners is at the heart of our brand values: Community and we are delighted so many of our team have been able to get involved recently. #Community #Passion #Success #Empathy #BeYouBeRare Mark Sansom Travis McKechnie Sean Weeraratna Joanne Sullivan Steve Cramer Sian O'Brien Sophie Canning Pasquale Izzo

After 5,000 miles, 354 days, 1 JustGiving award nomination and too many pairs of socks and trainers to count, Claire Allen's coastal walk came to an end over the weekend! Join us in congratulating Claire for her incredible achievement – walking the entire coast of Britain from John o’ Groats to Land’s End and back, raising over £20,000 for us and Shelter. While our ultimate aim is to rebuild lives through employment opportunities in hospitality, #FillAFlask24 has reminded us that there are lots of people who are not yet ready to take that step. Having a safe place to shelter, eat and see friendly faces is the first step many of our 500 members have taken. Jocelyn de Goey CBII's words below perfectly encapsulate the impact #FillAFlask has made on our volunteers. We couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who has taken the time to help our charity partners. Our next volunteering campaign takes place in November & December. If you would like to be involved in #WinterWarmth24, let us know in the comments below!

57 Volunteers from the hospitality industry have visited 21 charities across England and Scotland, giving up their time to deliver flasks, prepare meals and help our partner charities with duties as varied as gardening and cleaning. The feedback we’ve received from the charities has been overwhelming, and speaks to how hospitality can truly make a difference. #FillAFlask2024 comes to an end next week and we’ll be sharing some highlights from the last month, so stay tuned!
