The dream for many founders is to smash it, see huge growth, and skip off into the sunset. Realistically, doing well in the first 3 years of a startup is staying alive as a company and potentially getting to profitability depending on the business mindset. A couple of basics that are often overlooked, maybe because they seem taboo, are the mental health and financial health of the founders. Being a founder is a tough path, and I believe to give yourself the best chance, you need to be in a good personal space mentally and financially to weather the highs and lows of being a founder. Both times, I had a strange gut feeling and saw low performance. I was way too impressionable and had an inner dialogue that the company wouldn't survive without these managers. It turned out the opposite was true. Once I finally made the cut, the company flourished in both circumstances, as a result. I must admit that in the first instance the board told me to follow through with the termination - and I didn’t listen because I was scared. We welcomed Drummond Money-Coutts to the OPUS community in May as we launched in the United Arab Emirates, and while that is where he calls home now, Drummond’s mission is global as he seeks to bring magic to millions. As a magician and mentalist, he has performed to Royalty, Presidents, Prime Ministers and millions of viewers on Netflix and National Geographic amongst many other channels. This depth of skill is long acquired over the years, but Drummond is known to champion magic as a way to learn many invisible skills through growing up, such as confidence, communication and coordination.
