Building thriving communities

About us

Orbit is one of the UK’s foremost housing groups, managing a portfolio of quality, safe and affordable homes for over 100,000 customers. Socially driven and commercially minded, we are a not-for-profit committed to creating a better society, building affordable homes and communities, and to do so in more socially responsible and sustainable ways. For over 50 years we’ve been a force for positive change. We have a growing property portfolio of over 46,500 affordable and social rent homes across Midlands, East and South of England. We support over 100,000 customers in differing stages of life, from those seeking their first home to customers looking for enhanced supported living and are one of the UK’s largest developers of affordable housing, building over 5,300 new homes by 2025. Our Better Days programme offers support to help our customers maintain their tenancies, develop the skills to get back into work, access grants, apply for the benefits that they’re eligible for, and manage personal finances. As part of Better Days, we run Breathing Space, a mental health support service commissioned with Mind and Aspire4u, to support customers who are experiencing difficulties with mental health issues. This service aims to prevent problems occurring or worsening, tackling the causes rather than dealing with the consequences, with the ultimate goal of enabling our customers to be in control of their lives. We are a values-led organisation and are proud of our diverse, open, and inclusive culture where all perspectives are valued. We have an active People agenda and we’re always working hard to make Orbit the best place to work for our 1,200 employees.

Following a Business in the Community “Seeing is believing” visit, we recently joined forces with Fortem Solutions to fund and erect a new roof for St Francis Church in Coventry. The Church is home to St Francis Employability, which aims to transform its local community and the lives of local people, helping them to move towards social and financial inclusion, meaningful engagement in employment and education, and living a fulfilling life. Long-term damage to the roof had begun to affect the support that the charity could offer, so we were delighted to be able to provide them with a new roof and secure space from which they can continue to offer their valuable services. Revd Aggy Palairet said: "St Francis seek to provide a welcoming and safe space for all who come through our door regardless of religion, age, race and gender. It's wonderful to have our roof repaired so the people in this community can stay warm and dry and St Francis Employability can carry on delivering community work within the parish. A big thank you to Orbit and Fortem for all their hard work and for making our building safe once more." Watch more here 👉 https://bit.ly/3Mxi5mO Phil Andrew Selina Read

Orbit CEO, Phil Andrew supports calls for long-term funding settlement 👇 --- "I was pleased to read that the Chancellor is considering a 10-year funding formula for social housing providers ahead of the October budget. A long-term funding settlement is long overdue if we are to balance our need to upgrade the homes of our existing customers and build new high quality affordable homes that meet the needs of our communities. The ambition exists in housing associations to do more, and the government has made encouraging noises on planning reform and on new towns since coming to power. Not-for-profit housing associations like ours want to both improve our current homes to ensure they are future-fit for customers and build new affordable homes to help solve the housing crisis. But after years of uncertainty and underfunding our sector lacks the financial capacity that we now need to rebuild at speed whilst we also effectively plan, fix, and upgrade our existing stock. We need long term funding certainty, coupled with appropriate protections for customers, so we can make the necessary strategic investments to make our homes greener, and therefore cheaper to run for our customers, and these improvements are key to the nation reaching net zero. But that is only one part of the equation. To fully deliver the government’s desire of the ‘biggest growth in social and affordable housebuilding in a generation’ we also need urgent clarity on the new grant system from Homes England to truly accelerate the building of new affordable and sustainable homes, along with the regeneration of existing sites. The government cannot build 1.5m homes alone, it needs to work in partnership with builders across the sector to meet its objectives. Housing associations are a key player in this, we just need the certainty to get going and build the affordable homes so many families need." We're proud to have recently installed a new lifesaving defibrillator at our Better Days hub in Newmarket. 👏 Thanks to the support from the Department of Health and Social Care's Community Automated External Defibrillators Fund, who provided 50% of the funding. We matched this contribution to cover the total cost of the defibrillator and worked with our repairs and maintenance contractor MPS Housing who installed the defibrillator for free. Louise Millington Cert. CIH, Better Days Hub lead commented: “We want to help create communities where people feel safe and supported. We're delighted that we have been able to secure this essential lifesaving equipment for the people in and around our Better Days hub which also offers a range of free services to support people’s health and wellbeing.” Importantly, we've also registered the defibrillator on The Circuit, the UK’s national defibrillator network, ensuring the ambulance service can easily direct people to it in an emergency. https://bit.ly/4drCgOt #NewmarketCommunity #DefibrillatorFund #CommunitySupport #LifesavingEquipment

Recently we completed our refurbishment at Bushey Court in Bexley. We worked with our Orbit Homes professional interior designers to provide a safer, modern, and more welcoming space for older people. Francis Burrows, Director of Support and Service Development for Orbit said: “We want residents to have safe, comfortable homes that they love. We hope that the refurbishments have created modern, homely spaces that residents can relax and socialise in and be proud to enjoy with their friends and family.” To celebrate the completion, we were joined by residents and the Leader of London Borough of Bexley Council, Councillor Baroness O'Neill of Bexley OBE.
