The Fishing for Litter scheme is already producing great results 🎣 Marcus Viles, the owner of the Ocean Star fishing vessel came across some old backline whilst pulling in his creels. Marcus retrieved the rope and filled two of our reusable half-tonne Fishing for Litter bags. The recovered rope, pictured here at Stromness Harbour, will be disposed of safely and responsibly. #Orkney #FishingForLitter #MarineEnviromentalUnit #Environment #MarineLitter

The sixth round of the UK government's Contracts for Difference (CfD) is welcome news for the renewables sector. Offshore wind projects totalling 5.3GW have been approved through the scheme as well as numerous projects in solar, tidal and onshore wind. The Green Volt floating offshore wind farm, developed by Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, was awarded a CfD and will be located less than 100 nautical miles from Scapa Flow. We celebrate the overall progress made in this round and we eagerly look forward to future rounds, which we hope will deliver even more emphatically for offshore wind. Greater commitments over strike prices for developers of offshore wind farms, particularly floating, will encourage much-needed private investment into supply chain infrastructure projects. #OrkneyFuturePorts #Renewables #OffshoreWind #FloatingOffshoreWind #ContractsforDifference

Yesterday, we recognised the contributions and sacrifices of members of the Merchant Navy both past and present. In a wreath-laying ceremony at the Kirk Green War Memorial, Deputy Harbour Master Bradley Drummond reminded us of the importance of the Merchant Navy: “The approximate 80,000 men and women who work at sea under this flag are responsible for 95% of our nation’s trade. Anyone who has served in the Merchant Navy does and did so, with great pride.” The event was attended by representatives of the Merchant Navy, Orkney Islands Council members and staff, Royal Navy veterans, and Orkney residents. Merchant Navy seafarers have played a vital role in ensuring the safe operations of shipping activities across the UK, in both times of peace and war and in weather conditions both fair and dangerous. 📸Bruce Flett and Orkney Islands Council #MerchantNavyDay #MerchantNavy #RedEnsign #Orkney

Merchant Navy Day is a day of solemnity and a day of recognition. Through times of peace and war, our merchant seafarers have kept us strong and connected. Today, we honour the memory of those who served before us and celebrate the contributions of those who serve today. #RedEnsign #MerchantNavyDay #Seafaring #Orkney

Delivered through Innovate UK, the UK government has funded Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for £15m as part of Zero Emission Vessel and Infrastructure (ZEVI) fund. Artemis Technologies Ltd were selected to supply two next-generation ferries for a 3 year trial period in Orkney. Many Orcadians are dependent on ferries as a means of transport between Orkney’s 20 inhabited islands. These high-speed and fully electric, vessels, each of which uses an eFoiler® electric propulsion system, will be a welcome addition to Orkney Ferries fleet. Harald gives Silversea Cruises's Spirit a helping hand 🤝 We were also glad to welcome Seabourn Cruise Line's Sojourn on Friday. The luxury liner berthed in Hatston for the first time and we were kindly invited aboard to meet Captain Karras and crew, as well as exchange gifts. As customary with all first-time callers, we planted a tree on the islands as part of our commitment to protect and cherish Orkney’s environment. 📸 Erlend Manson #Orkney #Cruise #CruiseOrkney #CruiseIndustry #CruiseScotland

We welcome this new report on nature-inclusive wind farms 🌍 The Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council (SOWEC) report recommends measures for offshore wind developers to reduce their impact on the local marine ecosystem. Suggested measures include creating reef-type structures, mattresses for cable protection and fish hotels. With a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, on the 50th anniversary of our Marine Environmental Unit, we're pleased to see these recommendations from a reputable body like SOWEC. A major new wet storage project in Scapa Flow ⚓ Operated by Dana Petroleum Limited, the Western Isles is a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) which ceased production earlier this year. Leaving the Harris and Barra fields behind, the vessel will be in Scapa Flow for six months to a year before being redeployed to a new field. Significant work is required to prepare the vessel for redeployment, involving Orcadian suppliers, engineers, and logistics companies, which will boost the local economy. This project is a fantastic showcase of Scapa Flow’s wet storage suitability with deep and sheltered waters strategically located between numerous North Sea fields and wind farms. 📸 Lee Groat and Michael Allan #Orkney #WetStorage #ScapaFlow #Energy
