The HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine doesn’t prevent ovarian cancer. The vaccine, which is routinely given to girls aged 12 and 13 in England, protects against cervical cancer. There is currently no equivalent vaccine available to protect women from developing ovarian cancer.

"I was leading an active life, so when I started to feel lethargic to the point of exhaustion, my stomach was bloated and going to the toilet was a nightmare, I went to my GP.” Mum-of-three Angela was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 at the age of 46, after experiencing awful tummy pain. 21 years later, she's faced recurrence and treatment, but is still going strong with a smile on her face. Everyone has genes, but does everyone know what they mean? We think of it this way: genes are a manual that tell your body what to do. If you have a genetic fault or mutation, then it’s like a spelling mistake in that manual - it’s going to change how it works. BRCA genes are something everyone has, and they help fix our damaged cells and stop them from growing too fast. So, when there’s a fault in these genes, they can’t do their job. Every woman's experience of ovarian cancer is unique – so their treatment should be too. For too long, women with ovarian cancer have faced a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. New drugs mean that personalised medicine can be a reality, but 1 in 5 patients might not be getting the most effective drugs for their ovarian cancer. Our research centre deputy director and colleagues are working to change this. Professor Christina Fotopoulou and Dr Paula Cunnea are studying how ovarian cancer changes as it spreads in the body. The answers could change the way we test for these treatments, meaning more women could benefit from the most effective ovarian cancer treatment. “At the start of this journey, we knew very little about ovarian cancer and felt like those words meant a death sentence.” Olivia’s Mum started having bloating and tummy pain in 2015, so they went to the GP straight away. They were told it was IBS, but they knew it was something else - something worse. In February 2016, Ellen was told she had ovarian cancer. It took four months longer than it should have.
