👩🔬 👨🎓 We are starting a summer internship programme! 👩🎓 👨🔬 Over the last few months, we were lucky enough to have two university students Mimi Beale and Shu Liu intern with us. Mimi worked predominantly on clinical research and Shu on polymer R&D. We were blown away by the insights and perspectives they brought. They both got stuck in and delivered meaningful outputs that will benefit us as we progress in the clinic. We will have one R&D position and one Commercial/Clinical position available. Today marked my last day as an intern at Oxford Medical Products, a biotechnology company focused on combating the global obesity issue. Over the last 7 weeks I have had the pleasure of gaining experience in clinical trial operations as well as other areas of the business. As part of my internship, my main project was to complete a meta-analysis focusing on quantifying the placebo effect in randomised controlled weight-loss trials. Within this project I extracted data from over 15 papers, leading to a final sample size of over 2400 participants, which I later completed subgroup analysis on, splitting this sample into participants living with and without type 2 diabetes. Within this report, I focused on quantifying the change in outcome variables commonly used within weight-loss research, such as, weight (both %TBWL and kg), waist circumference, BMI and nausea at various time points. This project challenged me in many ways and allowed me to develop many of my scientific skills such as data extraction, data analysis and scientific communication. I am incredibly grateful to have been given an opportunity to complete research which will contribute to understanding OMP’s future Phase 3 trial results. I would like to thank Elanor Hinton and George Spooner for their support during my internship. I can’t wait to implement the skills I have learned from you both during my final year at Durham University. Finally, I would like to thank Camilla Easter for this opportunity, it has been such a valuable experience and I have really enjoyed my time as an intern at OMP.

✨ ✨ We are delighted that Rachel Dennison will be joining the OMP team as Chief of Staff. ✨✨ Rachel holds a master’s degree in Neuroscience from Nottingham University and completed her master's year at Harvard Medical School. During her time at Harvard, she co-authored a number of scientific papers, including her first lead-author publication on astrocyte-to-neuron conversion and reprogramming. Rachel then furthered her education with an MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise from Cambridge University, a program focused on the commercialisation of scientific research. She has interned at both UK and US biotechnology start-ups, gaining hands-on experience across all aspects of the companies and developing a well-rounded understanding of the industry. Recently, Rachel and her co-founders at Nimo Biotech won the Cambridge University start-up pitch competition with their innovative saliva-based glucose monitor. Rachel is an avid sportswoman and was a member of the Cambridge University triathlon team. 📢📢📢 Dr Mark Sumeray joins OMP as a Clinical Development & Medical Affairs Consultant 📢📢📢 We are delighted to welcome Mark Sumeray, M.D., MS, FRCS, to the OMP team. Mark has more than 25 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device sectors and was most recently the Chief Medical Officer for Amolyt Pharma. Mark has worked across a range of therapeutic areas including cardiovascular, metabolic and rare diseases. He has substantial clinical development experience and has been involved in all stages of interactions with global health authorities including the FDA and EMA. Mark received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from University College London and FRCS qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons.

A terrific couple of weeks in Houston at Texas Medical Center Innovation Factory to kick-start the Innovate UK BioBridge programme. We learned a lot about the intricacies of the US healthcare system and the factors we need to consider as we develop our go-to-market strategy. Looking forward to the virtual programme before we return in November (hopefully less hot)!
