When Energy Minister Chris Bowen MP got up to address the National Press Club yesterday, the trailblazing East Kimberley Clean Energy Project was at the front of his mind. “The energy transition that’s underway in our country can and will play a role in eradicating the gap of indigenous disadvantage,” he said. “First Nations people have had very little equity in traditional energy generation. And so far, only about 1 per cent of renewable energy projects in Australia have First Nations equity in them. “This compares to around 20 per cent in Canada. So, it doesn’t have to be this way in Australia. “The East Kimberley Clean Energy Project will see the construction of a 900 MW solar farm, the largest in Australia, and a 50,000-tonne hydrogen facility near Kununurra. “This project is an entirely new way of ensuring First Nations involvement in large infrastructure projects, with the traditional owners of the land – the MG Corporation and the Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC joining with the Kimberley Land Council and a climate change investment firm as equal shareholders. “Indigenous participation should be the norm, not the exception,” Minister Bowen said. “It should be standard operating procedure, not to be singled out at the National Press Club.” We couldn’t agree more and look forward to a future where that’s the case. Until then, the Aboriginal Clean Energy Partnership is setting a new standard and pushing onward with this groundbreaking project. The who's who of Australian renewable energy is gathered at #ACES2024, and Pollination's presence includes our CEO Martijn Wilder AM, Head of Projects Rob Grant and Executive Director Anna Hancock. On Day 1 Anna Chaired a panel asking: What’s beyond the Renewable Energy Target? Although the RET is set to expire in 2030, Australia is seeing the impact of initial rounds of the Capacity Investment Scheme and we now have a timeframe for the Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin. There is still enough uncertainty, however, for continued debate about how to maintain momentum for #renewables as the target end date approaches. The panel found cause for optimism, beyond the projections of voluntary demand and price conditions. There is growing commitment from companies looking to drive more #renewableenergy into more hours of the day. 🌳🤐 "Greenhushing is both legally and commercially imprudent," Pollination Law Managing Director Sarah Barker recently told a Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) webinar about nature risks and opportunities for boards and directors. The discussion, moderated by TNFD Executive Director Tony Goldner, covered how directors should approach the nature agenda, including the emerging risk of 'greenhushing' -- a reluctance to make environmental disclosures due to fear of exposure to claims of greenwashing. "Greenhushing is legally imprudent because so many nature-related dependencies and impacts are material financial risks or opportunities over the short, medium and long term that you have to be communicating them to your investors. If you don't, you are misrepresenting a material financial issue for your company," Sarah said. "Greenhushing is also commercially imprudent because these are issues that your investors, your customers and your stakeholders are concerned about. "They change their purchasing and investment decisions based on how they understand you are exposed and how you are managing those risks." If keeping quiet is not the answer, what should directors be doing? Check out this must-see webinar in full to see what Sarah advises. What do Singapore's leading financiers think about financing nature and what might help 'turn on the tap' and deliver the $US 200 billion a year the United Nations says is needed to finance nature repair by 2030? Pollination recently co-convened a Nature Finance Roundtable with Singapore Green Finance Centre and featuring leaders from many of the city's largest finance institutions to discuss these issues. Our CEO Martijn Wilder AM and SGFC Director Nikki Kemp penned this piece for The Business Times to synthesise the insights gathered during the discussion. Martijn and Nikki explore the part private finance can play and identify significant opportunities for Singapore in helping lead the #naturepositive shift. Pollination Managing Director Jane "Carter" Ingram recently spoke to S&P Global's ESG Insider podcast on the topic of unlocking financial flows for nature. She shared how the nature finance landscape is evolving but warns that despite growing interest and investments in nature-based solutions, significant gaps remain. She stressed that part of the solution is understanding “the degree to which changes in your dependencies or impacts on nature can have a financial impact on your business or on the economy." With the new Labour Government in place investors are now carefully considering what the new political consensus in the UK could mean for the energy transition. Commenting in Net Zero Investor Pollination’s Head of EMEA Patrick Suckling believes the election results could trigger significant progress on the road to net zero: “This landslide win provides the strongest possible mandate for change, where the incoming government has already made clear that one of the most transformative changes will be to end the backsliding on the UK’s journey to net zero, not least powering the nation with clean renewable energy. With over 90 per cent of global GDP committed to this journey, that is where the UK’s future lies,” he stressed. Read more: https://lnkd.in/egMpXHGv #energytransition #netzero

Pollination Chief Investment Officer Diana Callebaut led a London Climate Action Week discussion convened by Sustainable Markets Initiative to share views on how the investment community can not only restore and protect nature but also harness its economic value. These objectives are urgent and unmistakeable, she said. "Nature is our planet’s life support system, underpinning every aspect of our society, economy, and wellbeing - yet biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history." The Goals House event provided a forum for SMI members like State Street CEO Ronald O'Hanley, Lloyds Banking Group CEO Charlie Nunn, Barclays Group Head of Sustainability Laura Barlow and AECOM Head of ESG Advisory Services Robert Spencer to share how they are driving investment into sectors with the most opportunity to restore and harness nature.
