  • Co-founder of Quanta Dialysis Technologies and engineer Clive Buckberry has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in recognition of his contributions to the fields of medical engineering.   An MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, is an honour awarded by the British monarchy on behalf of the UK government. It is part of the British honours system which recognises individuals for their significant contributions to the arts, sciences, charitable work, public service, and other areas.   Beginning his career as a graduate at British Leyland’s tech centre Clive soon found his true calling in Experimental Stress Analysis. Here Clive honed his expertise in fatigue analysis, reliability, and advanced measurement techniques, laying the groundwork for his future innovations.   His skills led him to BMW where Clive became leader of the Vehicle Physics group. In this role he spearheaded the development of cutting-edge laser measuring systems and commercialised optical kits for industry leaders such as Mitsubishi, Honda and Ford. His tenure at BMW was distinguished by the filing of eight patents, the publication of 30 peer-reviewed papers and the receipt of the Dewar Trophy in 1995.   After BMW Clive became Engineering Director at an optical engineering company. Following three years in this role he joined IMI Vision, a move that eventually led to the creation of QDS and Quanta. In 2021 Clive was a key member of Quanta’s team who were awarded the MacRobert Award by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK’s longest-running and most prestigious national prize for engineering innovation.   In addition to his corporate achievements, Clive has made substantial contributions to the broader engineering community. Through the Royal Academy of Engineering and the NHS he reviews research grants, mentors young entrepreneurs and holds a honorary professorship at Heriot-Watt University. His work in laser measurement research and medical device manufacturing has garnered widespread uses in other industries.   His professional success is matched by a rich personal life in Warwick where Clive lives with his wife Luise, their children Hector and Kitty and a lively household of pets. An avid restorer of vehicles and a motorbike and a cycling enthusiast, he brings the same dedication to his hobbies as he does to his career.   The awarding of the MBE underscores Clive’s achievements and impact on the fields of medical engineering. This honour celebrates not only his technical innovations but also his commitment to advancing engineering as a whole.

  • Quanta is transforming the world of kidney care. Our compact, powerful system used from the hospital to home has an origin story inspired by technology used to reconstitute orange juice from concentrate. In 2022, we were recently honored with the MacRobert Award, the UK’s most prestigious prize for engineering innovation. This year, on the award's 55th anniversary, conceptual artist Ted Humble-Smith created a beautiful piece imagining a slice of orange representing a new dawn for cleaning our blood.
