Manufacturing matters. Last year, the UK's manufacturing sector contributed £217 billion to the economy, invested £38.8 billion, and supported 2.6 million jobs. With average salaries rising by £2,281 to £38,769, there has never been a better time for young people to join our fantastic industry with thousands of apprenticeships available across the UK - and the career prospects are truly exceptional! One such apprentice was Robert Lee who recently celebrated 10 years' service with British control panel manufacturer Westbury Control Systems Ltd after joining as a 'fledging wireman' back in 2014. He became part of a cohort of apprentices at the firm, gaining the necessary skills and knowledge on the shop floor, whilst attending a local college, working towards diploma level qualifications. After a fruitful five years, Rob was then promoted to serve as a Test Engineer; a highly respected role, being a trusted gatekeeper for quality, standards and accuracy across all types of control panels produced at Westbury. In 2022, Rob, never one to be complacent, felt that he was ready for a fresh challenge at Westbury and approached the management with the intention of progressing his career in more of an engineering direction. Westbury Control Systems Ltd's Managing Director Glynn Westbury recalls the situation: "Rob had demonstrated great initiative and long-term commitment, all ideal qualities and capabilities to make him a valuable addition to our Engineering Team, which supports our manufacturing production here at Westbury." Since then Rob has expanded his experience, undertaking drawing (EPlan) pre-production engineering, as well contributing to some of the commercial activities of the business, like prospecting new customers.
