This past weekend, an inspiring group of 28 volunteer REACT Responders completed a rigorous three-day humanitarian training program in Cumbria. Their commitment and hard work have equipped them with the essential skills needed to provide life-saving support and respond with impact during crises across the UK. Key Highlights: 🔹 Humanitarian Expertise: Our training program provided Responders with the tools and knowledge to offer critical support during crises, aligned with REACT’s core values. 🔹 Crisis Response Ready: Participants learned to act swiftly and safely in high-pressure situations, ensuring they are always prepared for emergencies. 🔹 Community-Centred: This course emphasises making a real difference, both on the ground and within local communities. Our Responders are now equipped to provide rapid humanitarian action to those hardest-to-reach and most vulnerable. A special thank you to Sedbergh School for hosting us in such an outstanding teaching venue. At the start of this month I was fortunate enough to be selected by the UNDAC team to represent REACT Disaster Response in Luxembourg on an UNDAC Operational Partners Course. UNDAC is the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination platform / concept. It sits within OCHA, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Generously hosted by the Government of Luxembourg, the participant list was made up of: IHP (and all of their various country branches), World Food Programme, IOM, ACAPS, Fairfax County INSARAG / USAID, Telecoms Sans Frontieres, MapAction, UN Dept for Safety & Security, IMPACT initiatives (REACH). It was brilliant to be able to see how the Humanitarian actors work together, and it confirmed my experience that what REACT Disaster Response does, is needed. REACT finds and helps the most vulnerable and hardest to reach in a disaster. To do that, the volunteers are trained, responsive, agile and empowered - key characteristics in a VUCA world bogged down by bureaucracy, "slopey shoulders" and risk aversion. Sincere thanks as always to the REACT HQ team for getting me out there and back, to the course organisers in Luxembourg and the UN, and the participants - thanks for being fun, friendly, interesting and impressive. Hurricane Beryl, the earliest and most powerful storm seen in the season, slammed into the Caribbean on July 1, 2024. We swiftly deployed teams to support local and international relief efforts. Our Responders completed their reconnaissance, and supported the distribution of vital aid, working alongside UNDAC (United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination) and World Food Programme. This is what our office prepares for. This is what our Responders train for. We anticipated the demand. We were ready. Our Response: ✅ Deployed a REACT team to assess immediate humanitarian needs. ✅ Engaged in productive meetings with Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the UK High Commission. ✅ Supported effective aid distribution and volunteer efforts in Union Island in partnership with WFP and UNDAC. It was reassuring to see such a rapid response from the humanitarian community. Shout out and respect to MapAction, UNDAC, World Food Programme, NEMO, World Central Kitchen, and other key partners for their swift response. The early and intense arrival of Hurricane Beryl highlights the growing severity of hurricane seasons, underscoring the critical need for preparedness and rapid response.
