Last Wednesday, Cían Sherwin attended the 2024 Stephen Lloyd Awards night in London and shared his thoughts on the memorable event: "It is a very special event close to our hearts at Real Ice. Two years ago, we won alongside The Vavengers and @R;pple Suicide Foundation, which enabled us to complete our first field test in Nome, Alaska, and achieve so much more through their network's support. Returning to contribute to the Stephen Lloyd Awards was really exciting and inspiring to see the next game-changers paving the way for widespread, positive change. It has been a few weeks since our CO-CEO, Cían Sherwin, and our advisor, Prof. Steven Desch, returned from our follow-up trip to Cambridge Bay. We have been busy going through our results from the trip, and we are excited to share a short summary below; ICE THICKNESS - We returned to the research and control sites, gathered ice thickness measurements and found that the ice had grown thicker (up to 50cm) in the areas where re-icing occurred. SALINITY MEASUREMENTS - Four ice cores were extracted (thanks to Asso. Prof. Brent Else from the University of Calgary and his ice coring device) from four locations. We found that the salt had moved through the new and existing ice layers, and the salt levels were within the ‘natural’ boundaries for salt presence within sea ice in the area. NEW RE-ICING AREA - We have identified a potential test site for our following tests over Winter 24/25. Again, we will collaborate with the Ekaluktutiak Hunters & Trappers Organization (EHTO) to ensure that the chosen area will have minimal impact on local wildlife and community activity. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - We were very pleased to continue our ongoing engagements in Cambridge Bay with the CHARS team, EHTO, Kitikmeot Chambers of Commerce, Kitikmeot Heritage Society, and Killinik High School, and to connect with members of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association, Kullaq Elementary School, and the Department of Fisheries & Oceans. We are so grateful to the team at Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) / Savoir polaire Canada (POLAIRE) for hosting us this year and to Talia Maksagak for her support while engaging with local organisations and community members. This article explains in a realistic manner climate change challenges that are ahead of us. In a gist: - The author, Sir David King, is the founder and chair of the global Climate Crisis Advisory Group - Today, the world is emitting over 50bn tonnes of GHGs (greenhouse gases in CO2 equivalent) annually into the atmosphere. - the GHG level in the atmosphere exceeds 500parts per million (ppm), compared with the pre-industrial level of 275ppm. A safe level for humanity is about 350ppm, so we must remove excess GHGs already in the atmosphere - It is absurd to think, as some influential fossil fuel leaders claim, that we can continue our economies based on burning fossil fuels because scientists are finding ways to capture the emissions - We must embark on a radical journey encompassing an essential “4R planet” pathway: Reducing emissions; Removing the excess greenhouse gases (GHGs) already in the atmosphere; Repairing ecosystems; and strengthening local and global Resilience against inevitable climate impacts. - Additionally, we will need to repair ecosystems to buy time, or else we will be overwhelmed by the consequences of melting polar ice and ice. Promising processes are under development but are hampered by inadequate funding… like pumping seawater on top of the thin layer of ice formed over the sea in the polar winter to thicken it. 🌍✨On May 25th and 26th, Andrea Ceccolini, Baeily EveTalegak, and Brandon Lengen travelled to the Vatican for the first World Children’s Day Rome 2024! Before an audience of 100,000 people, this morning in St Peter’s Square, Brandon and Bailey spoke about the impact that the reduction in sea ice is having on their community in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. 🌟We are excited to announce the expansion of our scientific advisory board with the addition of a new member🌊 Dr. Shuchi Talati, Ph.D. - An emerging climate technology and governance expert and the founder of The Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG), a non profit organization focused on empowering civil society and policymakers in climate vulnerable communities to engage in policy and decision-making for solar geoengineering. She most recently served as a Presidential Appointee in the Biden-Harris Administration at the U.S. Department of Energy where she was focused on creating just and sustainable frameworks for carbon dioxide removal. She was previously the Deputy Director of Policy at Carbon180 and the Science Fellow on geoengineering research governance and public engagement at the Union of Concerned Scientists. Dr. Talati was a AAAS/AIP Congressional Science Fellow in the U.S. Senate and served at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under Former President Obama. Dr. Talati earned a BS in environmental engineering from Northwestern University, an MA in climate and society from Columbia University, and PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in engineering and public policy.
