It's that coughs and colds time of year again... How often has it been said that if someone could find a cure for the common cold, they'd earn a fortune! But for now, we're just stuck with it and more likely to pick one up if we travel frequently too. Here's our top tips for what to do to cope with a cold: 🤒 Most colds can be managed with over the counter remedies to ease the symptoms. Antibiotics aren't generally recommended as colds are normally due to a viral infection. 🤒 Rest and sleep will help you to recover more quickly. But gentle exercise such as walking outdoors will also help. 🤒 Drink lots and lots of water. Either just water or water mixed with cordial or fruit juice is idea. 🤒 If you're able to, take paracetamol and/or ibuprofen for aches and pains, and to help manage a temperature. But be careful not to mix with other cold and cough remedies as it could result in an overdose. 😷 Remember good personal hygiene. If you've got a cold, keep it to yourself! Use tissues to catch it, kill it, bin it - cough, sneeze or blow your nose into a tissue, and throw it away. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Sleep. A mysterious state that often evades us, leaving us tired beyond words, irritable, lethargic and unable to concentrate! Most people who work at sea experience long hours and often night shifts, staying awake when our bodies are begging for a snooze. So, here's our top 5 tips for getting a good nights sleep... 😴 Try to get into a routine of going to bed and getting up at the same time and no napping in between! Set your bedtime at a time you normally feel sleepy. 😴 Cut down on screen time before you go to bed and make your bedroom a quiet space. 'Blue' light keeps us awake so putting phones and laptops away can help. Avoid TV in bed. 😴 Avoid stimulants or caffeine drinks for 6 hours before bed. While alcohol and tobacco products may seem to calm you, their effects can disrupt your sleep. 😴 Start some relaxing routines - warm milky drinks, light reading, taking a bath or shower. Deep breathing, yoga, meditation, mindfulness or soft music can help. Keep your bed linen fresh too! 😴 Exercise regularly. Activity helps keep the body and mind active but avoid vigorous exercise right before bed.
