REDRESS is an international human rights organisation that represents victims of torture to obtain justice and reparation. We bring legal cases on behalf of individual survivors, and advocate for better laws to provide effective reparations. Our cases respond to torture as an individual crime in national and international law, as a civil wrong with individual responsibility, and as a human rights violation with state responsibility. Through our victim-centred approach to strategic litigation we are able to have an impact beyond the individual case to address the root causes of torture and to challenge impunity. We apply our expertise on torture, reparations, and the rights of victims, to conduct research and advocacy to identify the necessary changes in law, policy, and practice. We work collaboratively with international and national organisations and grassroots victims’ groups.

Does it really need to take 51 years after a set of atrocities for a society to be ready to remove barriers to accountability? Is that how long it will take to achieve justice for those who suffered #torture in the 'war against terror' perpetrated by the US and its allies?
💶⚖️In recent decades, civil society and State actors have worked to support victims of human rights abuses in seeking justice, but efforts often lack mechanisms to ensure perpetrators provide adequate financial compensation, leaving many victims without proper reparation. Our new report ‘Financial Accountability at the International Criminal Court’ explores how the asset recovery mechanisms of the ICC can be deployed to obtain financial recovery for survivors of international crimes. The report also: 🔶Provides guidance for national stakeholders on how to recover the assets of persons accused of international crimes. 🔶Analyses the legal and institutional frameworks in eight European nations, and the United States, to assess their ‘readiness’ to respond to asset tracing and recovery requests from the ICC. 🔶Seeks to give “teeth” to the existing international framework on ICC asset recovery procedures to ensure that human rights abusers are held financially accountable and that the survivors of atrocities obtain reparation. Join us as we commemorate ten years since the Yazidi genocide and highlight the ongoing challenges and efforts needed to secure justice and a sustainable future for Yazidi survivors. Organized by Stichting Vluchteling, Yazidi Legal Network, and Yazda, this event aims to facilitate important discussions about the current struggles faced by Yazidi survivors and the progress made towards addressing their needs. The event will feature a special screening of Daughters of the Sun by Reber Dosky, a compelling documentary that explores the experiences of Yazidi women who survived the genocide. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Mr. Dosky and two survivors from the film, who will share their personal stories and provide valuable insights into their journey towards recovery and justice. Attendees will also get an opportunity to experience Nobody's Listening, an award-winning Virtual Reality initiative that commemorates the Yazidi genocide by ISIS in 2014. Ukraine advances towards becoming the 125th State Party to the ICC #RomeStatute. The Coalition for the International Criminal Court welcomes this long-awaited move and calls on Ukraine to fully commit to victims’ access to justice by refraining from using the ICC Statute war crimes opt-out clause. 📝 On 24 August, the Ukrainian President signed the ICC Statute ratification bill, following the Ukrainian Parliament's adoption of a bill to ratify the Rome Statute, with 281 votes in favour. Next steps: ☑️ The Ukrainian Parliament must adopt a law incorporating Rome Statute provisions into national law; ☑️ Ukraine can then deposit the ratification instrument with the UN. In the 1970s, Manuel Rojas Boyán was tortured in #Bolivia when he opposed military dictatorship. Both physical and psychological torture are core elements of the Article 1 definition of torture in the #ConventionAgainstTorture, adopted by the #UN General Assembly 40 years ago. "I actually think that there is perhaps no other point that could be more damaging. That you totally lose all notion of time. I mean, you don't know if you're on this planet, or where you are, what you are." Now a dedicated human rights activist, Manuel is confident that prevention of torture is achievable.
