Science-based ecological restoration for climate, biodiversity and people

About us

rePLANET is a for-purpose company, aiming to drive large scale nature restoration and protection through private sector funding. We design and implement projects across the globe that generate significant carbon, biodiversity and social benefits. Carbon and/or Biodiversity Credits are produced throughout project lifetimes, these are attractively priced, transparent and inclusive of local communities, with a minimum of 60% of credit revenues being paid to local stakeholders. We are currently developing several projects in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Scotland, Spain, Colombia and Indonesia. Project types range from riparian forest restoration with improved agriculture, to mangrove restoration and high nature value grassland protection. Our team distinguishes itself by being made up of scientific excellence, global networks and financial expertise and separate to project development is rePLANET's Nature-based Consultancy. The consultancy offers advisory services to organisations seeking to use innovative mechanisms to design, monitor and finance nature restoration and protection endeavours via insetting or offsetting. The Biodiversity Futures Initiative (BFI) works with project developers, private sector funders and certification bodies to provide independent academic peer review to biodiversity credit-generating projects and to audit claims made against them by their funders. Their goal is to help facilitate rapid expansion of high quality biodiversity restoration and conservation projects globally, by providing the scientific rigour and independent oversight needed to build trust in an infant biodiversity claims market. The BFI review process involves two review stages: ◻️ Stage 1 Reviews - Undertaken at the start of a project and designed to ensure that factors such as choice of metrics, proposed methodologies to quantify metrics and sampling strategies are appropriate. ◻️ Stage 2 Reviews - Completed at each verification event when the developer wants to make a claim about how much biodiversity gain has been achieved. The diagram below illustrates where the BFI reviews sit within a biodiversity project development pipeline. Heidi.news recently discussed biodiversity credits with rePLANET CEO, Dr Tim Coles. ◻️The article explores the complexities of the nascent market and why we need an agreed biodiversity unit. ◻️Wallacea Trust biodiversity units of gain that accompany carbon credits, increasing their quality and value are being sold by rePLANET. ◻️Next steps are selling projects that only deliver on biodiversity - this is key for restoration and protection of our carbon poor ecosystems e.g. coral reefs and grasslands. It's World Mangrove Day! Mangroves are incredibly valuable ecosystems, offering many ecosystem services such as improved water quality and storm surge protection, the forests also sequester significant amounts of carbon and are incredibly biodiverse, hosting 1500+ species of fauna and flora. Despite the intrinsic, environmental and socioeconomic value of mangroves, IUCN global assessment has revealed that over half of the worlds forests are at risk of collapse. Factors such as climate change, deforestation and pollution are the cause for this. Mangrove protection and restoration is vital for ensuring this ecosystem survives and thrives in the future. rePLANET have therefore developed several projects that restore mangrove forests, one of which is in Indonesia, click here to read more about its targets: https://lnkd.in/eCdiYkyX #WorldMangroveDay

💡What a great couple of days in Lincoln - the NbS conference was jam packed with informative presentations, interesting questions and debate. Key Conference Takeaways: 🌳Selling high quality carbon credits bundled with quantified units of biodiversity gain is an effective method for channelling finance into nature restoration 🌿Despite the hit avoided loss projects have taken from recent scandals, we cannot ignore the importance of protection not just restoration and so we need to find a way to rebuild trust in the avoided credits market 🌱Philanthropic investment into biodiversity credit generating projects may be key for kickstarting the market. We must also focus on building confidence in the nascent voluntary biodiversity credit markets 🍃We need clarity and unity within the market and a clear definition of biodiversity unit of gain will help with this Thank you to Julian Clifton and the University of Lincoln for organising and hosting this brilliant event. Pictured below rePLANET Nature Programme Manager, Dr Max Bodmer, discussing the challenges of creating low cost and scientifically robust biodiversity baselines on the AI panel.

Yesterday the first day of the Lincoln NbS Conference wrapped up with an inspiring ‘Examples of Private Sector Funded Nature-based Projects’ panel. rePLANET CEO, Dr Tim Coles, discussed several of our projects. Examples included our carbon funded reforestation and rotational grazing project in Costa Rica and the biodiversity and carbon project that will restore Taransay, the largest uninhabited Scottish island. The panel was chaired by Louis de Montpellier and we also heard from several other panellists: Charlie Burrell - Nattergal Ltd, Martin Schaefer - Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco, Benjamin Leutner - The Landbanking Group.
