Lock yourselves in for a heartwarming story this International Dog Day... 10-year-old Staffy Rookie came into RSPCA Birmingham Animal Centre and Hospital's care two years ago, severely emaciated and in need of extended hospitalisation. Whilst our investigation and prosecution case was underway, Rookie found himself with lovely fosterers, Malcolm and Brenda. Earlier this week, they got in touch with us as Rookie wasn't himself. The team carried out emergency surgery to remove his spleen and a mass, while we all feared the worst. The day after his surgery, we received news that he had finally been signed over for good, and he soon started to recover! Rookie's lab results have since come back as benign, and he has now been officially adopted by his fosterers who couldn't resist his contagious joy 🎉 Resilient Rookie's journey has been a rollercoaster and his fosterers have changed both his life and tens of other dogs' lives who have been able to use his saved kennel space. We're so happy that he will get to spend his retirement being adored. There's a role for every kind of person in animal welfare. Fostering plays a crucial part in animals' recoveries and we're so grateful to those who make a difference to animals in need!

Yesterday we took to the coast of Scarborough to raise awareness of our multi-charity #DogsDieOnHotWalks campaign 🏖️ Sadly not all people are aware of the impact of hot weather on their dogs, so this magnificent piece of sand art by Sand In Your Eye Ltd was a great reminder to take care when the weather heats up. With the help of our Scarborough and District branch, we engaged with over 300 people, providing advice on recognising and preventing the signs of heatstroke in dogs and emergency first aid. Find out more about the campaign: https://bit.ly/3YUwxwx #RSPCA #AnimalWelfare #WelfareAdvice #SandArt

Did you know that cows have best buddies? When given sufficient space, they go on walks together, snuggle up side-by-side to sleep and engage in play ⚽ Every kind of animal needs our compassion. By choosing higher-welfare dairy or going plant-based, you can make a difference!

Today marks the 33rd anniversary of Breed Specific Legislation, but it's no cause for celebration. It's also been six months since XL Bullies were added to the list of banned types of dogs. Since the start of the year, we've received 824 reports of XL Bullies who have been neglected, intentionally harmed and left unattended, which is an enormous increase across the board. We remain opposed to Breed Specific Legislation. It does not protect public safety and results in healthy, loving dogs being put to sleep based solely on appearance. Email your MP and urge them to work with the Dog Control Coalition using our science-based approach on this issue: https://bit.ly/2VO5DZ6 📸 Storm is one of the XL Bullies rehomed by the wonderful Bristol Animal Rescue Centre just before the ban came into force. This beautiful girl landed herself in a home where she now gets to be a big sister to three other dogs and is absolutely adored 💙

The right image captures the same dog snuggled up with a smaller black and white dog on an armchair. They are both asleep and look very comfortable.
