Manufacturing, by nature, is a resource-heavy industry, requiring materials, energy, chemicals and much more. However, as ESG and environmental responsibility continue to be a focus, all businesses in the manufacturing supply chain need to look at how they can adapt processes to get on board. As CNC milling is one of the key services that we provide for our customers, we have been looking at ways that we can achieve the same level of precision and quality whilst becoming more environmentally friendly. Optimising Energy Efficiency We use CNC machines that are energy-efficient, with advanced motors and drives that consume less power. We also have regular maintenance, ensuring they are operating at optimal efficiency. We work on smart scheduling to reduce idle times, minimizing energy waste. Using motion sensor lighting in communal areas to reduce usage. Reducing Waste Materials Our engineers optimise programming and toolpath to minimise material removal, reducing the amount of waste produced. We've implemented processes to collect and recycle scrap metal. Rather than use disposable cleaning clothes, we contract to have them cleaned and returned to us. Using Sustainable Materials We have replaced our traditional coolants with biodegradable, non-toxic alternatives, reducing the environmental impact of chemical waste. Wherever possible (and if the job allows), we use materials that are sourced sustainably. We use metals like steel or aluminium that have high recyclability. Employee Training & Awareness All of our team are educated on the importance of efficient manufacturing processes, including energy-saving measures, material conservation and proper waste disposal. It's up and running! Our new AMF vacuum clamping plate is now up and running for the preparation of copper plates for our Sodick Wire EDM machine. Each plate is machined both sides and has 12off wire start holes drilled. The machine time for each plate has been reduced from 10 minutes to 2 minutes - that's a massive time saving with a bulk order like the one we are working on. A big thank you a Luke Pulpett at YMT Technologies for the prompt supply of the vacuum plate and also to to Tony Fornsworth at AMF for technical advice on getting the most from our new tooling. Whilst we are enjoying the hot weather, bear a thought for all the engineers out there, working in these temperatures. With all the machines going in the factory it adds an extra 5°C or more on the temperatures outside, making it super challenging.
