Domestic abuse is not acceptable, not inevitable, and together - we can make it stop. For everyone. For good.

About us

We are SafeLives, the UK-wide charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, for everyone and for good. We work with organisations across the UK to transform the response to domestic abuse. We want what you would want for your best friend. We listen to survivors, putting their voices at the heart of our thinking. We look at the whole picture for each individual and family to get the right help at the right time to make families everywhere safe and well. And we challenge perpetrators to change, asking ‘why doesn’t he stop?’ rather than ‘why doesn’t she leave?’ This applies whatever the gender of the victim or perpetrator and whatever the nature of their relationship. Last year alone, nearly 13,500 professionals received our training. Over 70,000 adults at risk of serious harm or murder and more than 85,000 children received support through dedicated multi-agency support designed by us and delivered with partners. In the last four years, over 2,000 perpetrators have been challenged and supported to change by interventions we created with partners, and that’s just the start. Together we can end domestic abuse. Forever. For everyone.

Too many social workers are still entering the field without the essential skills needed to identify and appropriately respond to coercive control, leading to devastating consequences for victims and their families. It is critical that mandatory, comprehensive training on coercive control is implemented across all social work education programmes. SafeLives remains committed to advocating for this change and supporting Children’s Social Care professionals in gaining the knowledge and tools they need to protect the most vulnerable in our society. The time to act is now, and we call on policymakers and educational institutions to ensure that every social worker is fully equipped to recognise and respond to all forms of domestic abuse. https://lnkd.in/e8qw8T9n

It takes over 30 incidents before a victim of #DomesticAbuse will call the police. And only 1 in 5 victims make that call. It is vital that the police have the right training and understanding on the mechanics of abuse and #CoerciveControl in order to effectively and senstively respond to victims. And we urge police forces listen to the voices of survivors and learn from them, so that change truly meets their needs. SafeLives Pioneers around the country stand ready to work with them on achieving that. A new report by the Victims' Commissioner has found that almost three in four victims are not confident that reporting a crime will lead to justice and almost half of those questioned said they were not kept regularly informed by police about their investigation. We're working to boost the standard of police investigations from the initial report through to court will mean that all reasonable lines of inquiry will be followed when officers are dealing with a crime. Read the full statement from ACC Tom Harding and see more on what we're doing to support police officers and staff adhere to the Victims' Code: https://lnkd.in/ewKnFj8Q

    • "I’m disappointed to see many people tell the Victims’ Commissioner that they don’t feel confident reporting a crime will lead to justice. I share Baroness Newlove’s concern and I’m clear that all victims deserve the highest standard of service from policing and across the criminal justice system.

Being a victim of crime can be traumatic and it’s really important that the police, often as the first responders, are able to reassure and support people.

At the College of Policing we are working to improve the standard of police investigations from the initial report through to court, so we can get justice for more people. The College’s guidance sets out that officers must follow all reasonable lines of inquiry and adhere to the Victims’ Code. This means officers are clear on what they need to do to deliver the best possible service to the public, even when we don’t have the evidence to take a case forward." - Assistant Chief Constable Tom Harding, Director of Operational Standards

The Drive Partnership and Respect UK have launched a new training course, Culturally Competent Work with Perpetrators of Domestic Abuse. This training was created through working with professionals with lived experiences across the sector. The first sessions will take place from 24 to 25 September 2024. This course will encourage participants to actively reflect on culture and cultural competency and will increase understanding on how to engage with perpetrators from any background or culture. Learners will interrogate cultural biases and barriers that feed into practice, and they will learn and practice how to navigate and respond to cultural and religious justifications for abuse. Participants will learn how to understand, work with and across different cultures. They will also consider the diverse ways in which culture influences practice. EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) is a key part of the Respect Standard, and this training covers how to meet this standard. Sign up now at https://lnkd.in/eJQwMPBf
