It was smiles all round at Kings Hill Solar Park in West Malling when it was officially opened earlier this week ☀ Our team was thrilled to attend a special opening ceremony and tour the area to learn more about how the project is making a positive difference to people and the planet 🌍 The panels are connected to the county’s main grid and are expected to generate enough clean, green energy to power 750 local homes throughout the year. The project also anticipates that more than 630 tonnes of carbon emissions will be offset, supporting Kent County Council's aim to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. 🌍 “In order to preserve this earth, we have got to reduce the reliance that our energy system has on fossil fuels.” – This is the message that underpins a documentary we’ve produced to highlight the importance of funding in our response to the climate crisis 🌱 Launched in 2020, the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme was designed to deliver grant funding to the public sector for capital works to decarbonise buildings. Since 2020 we have delivered various phases of the scheme which is run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero 💚 Now, projects that have been funded through the scheme are being celebrated, not only for reducing the carbon emissions and progressing the net zero agenda, but also for the positive impacts the works are having to the people who use the spaces. Learn how Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh campus used the Scottish Funding Council’s University Carbon Reduction Fund 🏢 ☀️ The National Robotarium is a purpose-built facility that hosts advanced research laboratories with specific environmental control requirements, which are often associated with increased energy consumption. ☀️ A large solar array was specified to provide a generous supply of green electricity, a carbon reduction benefit, and management of lifetime energy costs. ☀️ The array will provide the facility with around 86,500 kWh of renewable generation each year, reducing emissions by around 18.25 tonnes and saving around £24,800 in operating costs. 🔙 A little #ThrowbackThursday from July 2023 #edinburgh #heriotwattuniversity #university #decarbonisation #netzero #salix #scotland #scottishfundingcouncil #carbonreductionfund #solar #solarpv

East London schools have been at the heart of a 16-year long sustainability initiative led by the local council 💚 The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham supports a population of more than 218,000 residents, 26% of whom are children aged 0-15. This is understood to be the highest proportion of children supported by any local authority in England. The council run a total of 62 schools from infant schools through to secondary schools and have pledged to reach net zero borough-wide by 2030. To support their ambitions, they set up an England Recycling Fund ♻, which has enabled them to complete a total of 95 sustainability projects. Many of these projects focused on green upgrades for schools across the borough, encompassing technologies such as LED lighting, solar panels, insulation, draft proofing and heating control upgrades. Alongside improving the classroom environment, the works have played an important role in the children’s climate education programme. Projects were used to teach pupils about the importance of energy efficiency measures in our fight against climate change and prompt discussion on the difference these upgrades make to the schools’ carbon emissions.
