  • A big Sally Army shout-out to marvellous Max who recently skydived from 10,000ft to fundraise for his local Salvation Army in Nottingham! “Jumping out of a plane is not something I envisioned myself doing when enrolling at Nottingham Uni!” Max says, “Still, I was blessed to have met a wonderful group of people through the local Salvation Army branch. They have helped the community, including students, in so many ways and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to give back and raise money with them. "I have seen first-hand the inspiring ways in which the hard-working people behind this charity have been helping our communities and...I'm very lucky to have met these loving people, who work so hard to raise our communities.” Max absolutely smashed his £500 fundraising target- raising a grand total of £722! • We are delighted to announce a new partnership between our trading company, Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) and Dunelm the UK’s largest homewares retailer, to launch an online textile takeback scheme which will help tackle textile waste. The new partnership will encourage customers to help divert more items away from disposal by separating textiles into ‘reusable’ and ‘non-reusable’ items, with clear guidelines given. The items do not have to be exclusively from Dunelm, they can be from any brand, making this a convenient solution to tackle nationwide textile waste. The profits received from the resale of items will be given to The Salvation Army to continue to support the services we offer across the UK. • The hot weather we are experiencing this week is dangerous for people who are living on the streets as it puts them at risk of sunburn, dehydration and even heatstroke. Here are some ways you could help. We are also doing all we can to support rough sleepers in this extreme heat. For many people, a place to cool off with a bottle of water is an essential lifeline. Please donate to support this work: https://brnw.ch/21wLC8A

  • We are concerned that some of the measures announced by The Chancellor on Monday could drive even more people further into poverty and place the burden of the budget deficit onto vulnerable families. Families are already facing rising costs and are struggling to provide for their children. As Lieutenant Colonel Nick Coke says: "We recognise that difficult decisions will have to be made but for our whole society and the economy to thrive it must invest in our most marginalised families, not drive them further into poverty. “We hope Government will use its review of the welfare system to make sure benefits properly cover the cost of housing and other basic essentials – and to remove the two-child benefit cap. We must ease the burden of those who have been suffering for too long.” Join our campaign urging the Government to rethink how public services and the welfare system can level the playing field for families marginalised by poverty; and invest in the services that will give families and children a chance to live life to the full: https://lnkd.in/eUM8KT-w

  • Congratulations to Ali Thornton-Dean, (pictured centre) our Outreach Mission Partner for older people, a dementia ambassador, who has been recognised for her awareness raising work at the National Dementia Care Awards. Ali was named finalist for a Dementia Outreach Award at a ceremony held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. The awards acknowledge incentives that support people affected by dementia and rewards the people who have made a real difference in the field. Ali was honoured for her longstanding dementia outreach work in Salvation Army churches and centres across the UK and for being a national lead for the dementia friendly Singing by Heart Programme, which enables people with dementia to communicate, encourages them to recall good times and have fun through a mixture of secular and religious songs. Over 100 churches and centres across the UK now run Singing by Heart. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eCbi5ECj

  • The summer should be a happy time for families filled with fun days out, trips to the seaside, making memories that last a lifetime. But this summer, many are worried it’s going to place an even greater burden on already struggling families. Recent research has revealed that 25% of working parents are concerned about the cost of feeding their children over the holidays, while a shocking 50% of all parents are worried about the cost of buying school uniforms for the new term. We’re doing all we can, but we need the Government to prioritise families so that they get the support they need. We are calling on the Government to prioritise families by scrapping the two-child benefit cap; ensure our welfare system guarantees families can afford essential items; and continue to help with housing costs for those eligible. The Government will have the opportunity to do so in the coming months – join our campaign for them to do so today: https://bit.ly/3Lfu9bx

  • Poppy has experienced a traumatic childhood in a deprived part of Scotland. She now lives with her loving grandma Tara – who is doing all she can to give Poppy a stable and nurturing home. But it isn’t easy because money is tight. Tara has no money for treats and days out, let alone holidays. She says: ‘I couldn’t even afford for her to go to her cousin’s party recently, because with travel and entrance it was going to cost too much.’ So going to activities with The Salvation Army has been life-changing for Poppy. It started when Poppy went on an Adventure Day with her local Salvation Army. Poppy went on to attend a junior camp for a whole week last summer and The Salvation Army funded her place. It was her first time away from home, and Poppy had a fantastic time and says: ‘It’s the best thing ever!’ She enjoyed new experiences, including a talent show, climbing wall, zip line, swing, obstacle course, water fight, team challenges and sitting around a campfire. It was a turning point for Poppy. As Poppy grows more independent, it’s no exaggeration to say that our summer camp has changed her life – and that’s thanks to kind supporters like you who support our work with your generous donations. Poppy’s already counting the days till she can go again this year. Children like Poppy need and deserve the chance to grow into happy, healthy young adults. Please give as much as you can so that we can fill the holidays of disadvantaged and vulnerable children with activities and unforgettable adventures and help people in need in many other ways: https://brnw.ch/21wLqnQ

  • Children being able to enjoy the summer should not be a luxury which is why we run summer camps, play groups, drop-ins and other activities over the holidays. Lieutenant Colonel Nick Coke has spoken about the impact these activities have on both the children and parents; “Children get to spread their wings and struggling parents get a little but much needed break too. “However, we don’t want children to just survive summer holidays with three square meals and uniform that fits for the new term; we want them to thrive, play, explore and relax.” With 50% of parents worried about the cost of school uniforms and 25% concerned about the cost of food we are calling on the Government to prioritise support for struggling families when they publish their first budget in the autumn. • A bright image of a girl of primary school age sitting at a picnic table. We are focused on her but you can tell the table is full of other kids her age. Her curly hair is pulled into a high ponytail and she is wearing a purple vest top and bright pink round sunglasses. She's laughing and eating what looks like ice cream.

The quote over the image from Lieutenant Colonel Nick Coke says: "We don't want children to just survive the summer holidays... we want them to thrive, play, explore and relax."
