Bedding Mortar Cement/sand mortar bedding can be used for terrazzo tile and most natural stone floorings. The bedding mortar can be bonded to a base or used with a semi-dry consistency when a weak bond is required. Unlike screed, bedding mortar is covered by tiles while still in its fresh state and, therefore, cannot be tested in situ for quality/strength. However, Sandberg can audit the mixing, compacting and laying process, providing an independent check on workmanship. Many problems associated with tiled flooring can be traced back to issues with the bedding. Sandberg has extensive experience investigating tiled flooring failures. Impact Testing of Glass Panels Glass barrier panels forming part of walls, facades, balconies, balustrades or parapets are required to meet the impact test requirements in BS6180:2011 'Barriers in and about Buildings' and BS EN 12600:2002 'Glass in building'. Pendulum test. Impact test method and classification for flat glass.' The impact properties of glass infill panels are very important where people may come into contact with them, especially when moving, such as running down a stairway. To ensure the panels' integrity, on-site and laboratory testing services are provided. Testing is conducted in strict accordance with British Standards. Efflorescence Efflorescence is caused by soluble salts in building materials or soluble salts transferred into building materials by water being drawn towards a drying surface by the movement of water. At the surface of the building material, the water responsible for transporting the salts evaporates, leaving behind the salts as a surface deposit. Efflorescence can often result in damage caused by salt crystallisation, leading to the breakdown of mortars and renders or the 'blowing' of the surfaces of brick and blockwork. Sandberg has undertaken numerous assessments of efflorescence, including many resulting from our specialised commission for English heritage. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Surveys Sandberg has an in-house Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) department, specialising in non-intrusive surveys for the Civil Engineering and Construction industry. GPR uses high-frequency radio waves to detect changes and objects in the subsurface and is now widely recognised as a highly cost-effective, non-intrusive testing technique. It offers a rapid means of obtaining subsurface information from soil and various materials, including concrete, brick, masonry and asphalt. Sandberg was amongst the first to recognise the potential of Ground Penetrating Radar as an investigative survey technique in the Civil Engineering and Construction industries. Screed Testing Sandberg can assist with screed testing and specification compliance and has extensive experience in assessing the quality of screeds and carrying out failure investigations. Testing of Car Park Barriers to BS 6180 Failure of inadequate barriers has resulted in cars falling from car parks. Barriers should be designed and installed in accordance with the requirements of BS 6180:1999 'Code of Practice for Barriers in and about Buildings'. The only means of ensuring that all components of an installed barrier work together to achieve the required performance is to conduct in-situ testing on the completed system.
