As the #Paralympics Opening Ceremony kicks off later today, we're wishing the best of luck to SRUC's own Ben Sandilands who'll be taking on the Men's T20 1500m in Paris! It's already been a successful season for reigning World Champion Ben, who after finishing in the top 10 of our XC Championships, represented the SSS National Squad at the British Athletics Cross Challenge event in Renfrew. Friday squad paddles 🛶   Our team is full of people from a whole world of sports. With all this in-house expertise, we love coming together to try different sports.   Last Friday our Inclusion & Culture Coordinator Eilidh Gibson took us to the canal for a highly anticipated afternoon of canoe polo. Following some basic skills lessons, and with an engaged but somewhat confused crowd watching on, we played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.   Huge thanks to Poppy from Forth Canoe Club for hosting us - and providing some structure to the chaos. Breaking new ground on campus   Last summer we launched the College Active Campus Network alongside sportscotland and Colleges Scotland - a landmark initiative designed to grow the number of sport and physical activity staff on campus.   One year on and we have 16 Active Campus Coordinators based in institutions across the country, all with a focus on promoting active health and wellbeing across the student population.   What's been remarkable has been seeing how each individual ACC has taken on the challenge of delivering sport in their institution. We've seen some brilliant results including:   👉 Boccia numbers booming to 469 registered students across Scotland 👉 Glasgow's colleges combining to run 11x cross campus sports events over the year 👉 West College Scotland engaging over 200 students on International Mother Language Day 👉 Colleges across the country running events for Mental Health Awareness Week 👉 Record numbers participating at our College National Finals Day   Active Campus Coordinators: what have been your highlights? Talking Active Health 🗣   A real highlight for us saw the running of two successful Active Health Forums, designed to bring university and college staff together for some shared learning.   November's meetup - the first to have our Active Campus Coordinators present - was hosted alongside SAMH with a mental health awareness theme and provided a great networking opportunity.   Then in April we returned with an inclusion focus, featuring a taster to wheelchair basketball with basketballscotland before hearing from Paralympian Mel Woods on her story from P.E teacher to world class athlete.   We loved seeing the collaboration that resulted following these events with some strong relationships being developed between universities and colleges. More of this next year we're sure!   P.S. huge congrats to Mel who on Friday was selected to compete in Paris next month. We're all behind you 🙌 #activehealth #inclusioninsport #studentsport

Ready to paint their legacy 🎨   A massive good luck to the Scottish student athletes both past and present taking to the tracks, pools and pitches of the 2024 Paris Olympics.   We count at least 10 current students set to compete in Paris, alongside many more alumni from institutions across the country.   Of course we can't forget the incredible background support staff, which this year includes our own Head of Comps Christopher Purdie who is out with Team GB.   Roll on the Opening Ceremony! #paris2024 #studentathletes #studentsport

National Squads Back on Track Since the pandemic, it's been a long road back for some sports to return to a competitive programme.
