We believe in the potential of everyone. But there is still an often-overlooked pool of talent who face bias in the hiring process. They are hidden talent. Hidden by non-inclusive hiring practices. Hidden by misconceptions. Hidden by inaccessible job vacancies. But it's our goal to change that, and work with employers to foster an inclusive recruiting journey and workplace. Celia Chartres-Aris (née Hensman) shines a light on how the disabled community are often overlooked in the hiring process, or subjected to stereotypes over "what we can and can't do, that have been decided for us." By embracing diversity and implementing fair hiring practices, employers can unlock the true potential of every candidate, driving success and growth for their organisations. You wouldn't think that... ❌ Dwayne Johnson was 'old' ❌ Emma Watson was 'unintelligent' ❌ Bukayo Saka 'inexperienced' ❌ Steven Spielberg was 'untalented' ❌ Kadeena Cox was 'lazy' Yet, everyday, jobseekers are overlooked due to their age, neurodiversity, education, disability, and more. A combination of unconscious bias and inaccessible job opportunities leads to many highly talented and skilled people feeling excluded from the job market. But it doesn't have to be that way. Join us in creating equal opportunities and driving innovation through inclusive hiring practices. A survey of over 2,000 UK employers revealed a 17-year high of 80% struggling to fill roles. Despite this, we know that there is a large pool of hidden talent who are often overlooked. This is why we're on a mission to shine a light on hidden talent and help employers create an inclusive recruiting journey and workplace. By embracing diversity and implementing fair hiring practices, employers can unlock the true potential of every candidate, driving success and growth for their organisations. This week we opened Misterton school in Somerset, a therapeutic education service which we’ve developed as part of our award-winning Strategic Partnership between Somerset Council and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust Foundation Trust. Watch the video tour below! ⬇️ The Education service in Misterton, owned by the Diocese of Bath and Wells, will be run by Horizon’s Therapeutic Education Trust. We developed this school to provide a different kind of learning environment for children who need extra support. Children in care and children whose health impacts their ability to succeed in mainstream schooling will get support from mental health specialists and therapists, who’ll work with them to help them make the transition back into education.  A huge amount of work has gone into to developing this school, which is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. We hope you’ll join us in congratulating all the teams involved in making this ambitious vision a reality.     And of course, we’re looking forward to seeing the progress of the children when the school opens for term! Read more here https://lnkd.in/dAXwny3t At Shaw Trust, we believe that partnerships, not profiteering, are the future for delivering great care for children. If you are interested in learning more about how a strategic partnership with us could help your organisation improve care for young people while reducing costs, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch with us by emailing [email protected] for more information. Video description: Short video clips of the building and it's rooms inside. Yesterday Shaw Trust CEO, Chris Luck, Head of Disability Power 100, Alona De Havilland, and 20 members of the Disability Power 100 joined Channel 4 CEO, Alex Mahon, and the British Ambassador, Meena Rawlings and 350 guests in Paris at a celebration for Paralympics 2024. The importance of the Paralympics cannot be understated. Twelve years on from London 2012, the Paralympic movement has changed perceptions of disability across the world. As viewers we know we are watching the world’s most elite athletes. Channel 4 has been at the forefront of this mindset change in bringing world class coverage into every home. It has been, as Alex Mahon, declared “A revolution of inclusion”. And it is a revolution we at Shaw Trust are proud to be a part of. Our work supporting people, many with lived experience of disability, is part of this revolution of inclusion. It is the daily conversations we have breaking down stereotypes, confronting perceptions and building disability confidence with employers at every level. It is our Disability Power 100 campaign championing disabled leaders, role models and trailblazers working across the UK – who like our Paralympians are challenging perceptions of what is achievable in their chosen fields. It is in our determination to always “fly the flag for every disabled person” when we are talking about new approaches to employment. On Monday Team GB achieved two significant milestones, they won their 2,000th Paralympics medal and 700th Gold. Fantastic achievements, but as David Clarke OBE, Paralympics GB CEO, and Disability Power 100 judge, said “It’s not just about the golds, it’s about a movement that leads the world. A movement that has evolved through sympathy, empathy, awareness to enjoyment.” A movement we are proud to support at Shaw Trust as we achieve our own milestones of getting people into work they enjoy, is fulfilling, offers opportunities and purpose.

Employers, are your teams lacking diversity or representation from the following groups of people? If so, it might be time to start looking at your recruitment and hiring process. It might sound simple, but if you don't offer flexible work, it's likely that many parents (single or otherwise), or people from the disability community, might not even consider applying. If the wording you use on your job description is gendered, and/or you don't demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, then perhaps people from the LGBTQ+ community might not feel welcome. Or if you're asking for five years of experience for an entry level role, many young people won't even bother. That's what we mean by hidden talent - everyday, skilled people who are overlooked or 'hidden' by non-inclusive hiring practices. Ready to discover hidden talent? Award-Winning Strategic Lead in Equality Diversity Inclusion, Accessibility and Belonging. SME in Talent Management; Author; C-suite facilitator; Hays' Recruitment Global Leader; Chair of RIDI, #DisabilityPower100

Amazing day in #Paris #France yesterday at the #Paralympics reception organized and hosted by Channel 4 and Shaw Trust I was honoured to be there as a judge of the Shaw Trust #Power100 #DisabledInfluencers Awards and as Chair of the Recruitment Industry Disability Initiative (RIDI) Awards At first quite an overwhelming experience being in the presence of so many #paralimpians and amazing people who have achieved so much in the field of disability #inclusion, in the stunning setting of the residence and grounds of the UK’s Ambassador to France. Although there is still so much to be done in #accessibility and inclusion of #DisabledPeople in all facets of life, particularly in #Transport and #employment - it was lovely to enjoy a fleeting moment of #celebration and reflection. It made me think of my beginnings as Chair of the London 2012 Disability Community group, and the amazing people I have met since. The rights of disabled people are human rights and it’s so important to remember that. In the same way that gravity and sport don’t care about our stories (as per Channel 4’s brilliant ad for the Paralympics) #inspiration is not enough to ensure #equality. #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs Dr Shani Dhanda Giles Barker BEM Celia Chartres-Aris (née Hensman) Alona De Havilland Chris Luck CB MBE DL Diane Lightfoot Alex Mahon David Clarke OBE, PLY Chris Ratcliffe Atif Choudhury

A Paralympic Garden Party in the stunning British Embassy in Paris on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore That’s surely as good as a Tuesday can get!? A crowd of 350 guests, athletes, partners and the disability power list honoured us with their time to guzzle pimms, eat cucumber sandwiches and celebrate all that is wonderful about the power of the Paralympic movement. Dame Ambassadrice Menna Rawlings welcomed us to the incredible building where we were delighted to talk about our joy as Channel 4 to help build and support the games, promote everybody moves so that EVERYONE in the UK can access sports and to talk about Equal Play and the rights of disabled kids in schools to get to play and exercise. A perfect day, the sun came out, the venue was incomparable and the brilliance of the group there shone through.
