Continuing our posts sharing news about our amazing Engineering student societies, today we want to tell you more about our Sheffield Formula Racing society 🏎 In anticipation of the IMechE Formula Student competition next month, our team hosted an exciting launch event last weekend! They unveiled the new car and presented insightful talks from the team directors. It was fascinating to hear about some of the challenges they overcame throughout the year and to see how they have worked together and how collaboration with their sponsors has contributed to what we hope will be another successful car. 🌟 Check out the photos which demonstrate their hard work and innovation as they gear up for the competition! #FormulaStudent #EngineeringExcellence #Teamwork #Innovation The University of Sheffield Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield
On Sunday, we launched SFR15, our 2024 entry for the Formula Student competition. Our Team Principal James Wells introduced and unveiled the car, whilst Technical Director Alex Smith and head of CFD Sam Round presented the technical developments for this year. This was then followed up by a talk from our Manufacturing Director Edward Priestley on the issues we have overcome as a team this year. We then had a look around the car, as well as other assemblies waiting to be installed, and chatted with sponsors and alumni who attended. Due to time constraints, we couldn’t get our aero package on for launch but we managed to have a rolling monocoque ready to show off. A special thank you to everyone who has made this possible, all of the sponsors who have helped us out so far, our new Faculty Advisor Kate and the team for incredible work this year! We will continue posting our progress leading up to the competition.

It's a busy time of year for student societies here in Engineering at Sheffield as many of them are preparing for competitions. We want to shine a spotlight on some of the amazing things they've been doing during the past academic year: Our Railway Challenge at Sheffield student society is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year and held a special launch event to unveil their new locomotive for 2024. 🚂 This impressive feat of engineering is set for the IMechE Railway Challenge next weekend, and we think it looks fantastic! 🌟 Take a look at the photos in their post below and see what our Engineering students at The University of Liège of Sheffield have accomplished this year. Their hard work and creativity are truly inspiring! #EngineeringExcellence #StudentInnovation #RailwayChallenge2024 #SheffieldEngineering
On Saturday evening, we held our first ever launch event to celebrate 10 years of the team! 🌟🚂 We had speakers Charlotte Currie (Team Principal), Jacob Whittle (PhD Supervisor) and James Heginbottom (Technical Coordinator) look back at what we have achieved in the last year and reflect on the progress we have made during the history of the team. We unveiled 'RCAS X', the tenth iteration of RCAS locomotive, running through the Engineering Heartspace showing off our new livery, lights and speakers. Building on last years single body design, this year we have many new features, including new axle boxes, nose cone, remote data monitoring, motorised jacking, auto-coupler and a more optimised powertrain. We are all very excited to see how we perform at Institution of Mechanical Engineers #railwaychallenge competition the week! Thank you to all the family, friends and faculty members who attended and a huge thank you to everyone that has supported us over the past year: Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield, Furrer+Frey AG, Accu, ClearVue Technologies Limited (ASX:CPV), Eaton, Ecobat, LB Foster, Lynch Motor Company, Rail-Ability Ltd, Thorite, MERail & RITC and The B17 Steam Locomotive Trust #sheffieldissuper #sheffield #engineering #sheffieldengineering #engineeringatsheffield
