How is AI aiding scientists in diagnosing diseases sooner? To finish the week, we want to showcase how AI is used for Parkinson’s diagnostics. Scientists in UCL’s Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health are testing an AI-enhanced blood test to detect if someone could develop Parkinson’s in the future. A Machine Learning algorithm identified eight proteins with different concentrations in the blood of Parkinson’s patients. This discovery has opened the door to additional trials to continue identifying trends that could lead to earlier diagnosis. Even if the journey to prevent or cure Parkinson’s and other progressive disorders has a long way to go, these studies show how AI can shorten the path to earlier diagnosis and, potentially, to the development of preventative treatments to improve patients' quality of life.

Can AI help improve marine conservation? 🐋 To close the week, we reflect on this insightful article from Smithsonian magazine that explores #AI's application to track vessels worldwide and assess potential illegal fishing activity. Nautical Crime Investigation Services, an AI startup, uses AI to police marine crimes and vessels in the ocean. Their algorithm consumes data from a global database of fishing vessel criminal records, customised monitoring technology, fishing activity patterns, and equipment. It assesses vessels and determines if they are suspects of illegal fishing. This information is then sent to local authorities, helping them increase the efficiency of their patrolling efforts in vast areas. There are still many challenges to address, such as ensuring data availability to prevent illegal vessels from operating under the radar, increasing the speed at which authorities can reach the reported criminal activity, and avoiding the misuse of tracking technologies for unethical purposes. Even if these efforts are just the beginning of a massive global task, we can see how AI is generating a positive impact by providing insights that enable more concrete, accurate actions to protect the oceans.
