Section 21 evictions, also known as "no-fault" evictions, are a major cause of homelessness - at least 26,000 households have been evicted through the law since 2019, according to Shelter. Section 21 allows landlords to evict tenants with just two months’ notice without giving them a reason. This leaves thousands of people who are renting in the lurch, forever unstable and unable to find a place to build a life. The insecurity can place a huge burden on people affecting their health and wellbeing. Some renters are afraid to speak out about issues with their housing for fear of being evicted. In tomorrow's #KingsSpeech, the Government must stick to its manifesto pledge to "immediately" ban so-called no-fault evictions and deliver further improvements for renters through the Renters Reform Bill. Together, let's make renting safer, fairer and more secure for families across the country. Everyone deserves a place to call home. #HousingCrisis #HomelessnessAwareness #Renting #EvictionBan

The first national census of women sleeping rough, which we designed and coordinated in partnership with Solace Women's Aid, found there could be up to nine times more women sleeping rough than the Government’s annual Rough Sleeping Snapshot indicates. It shows women are significantly under-represented in rough sleeping data. Last month, our Board Chair Jon Rosser spoke to The Do One Better Knowledge Hub and Podcast about our crucial work with women experiencing homelessness. And why, especially with a new Government in place, we're using our work to advocate for improved gender-informed support and policies, more women-only accommodation and investment in equitable data collection methods that account for women's experiences of homelessness. Homelessness policies and solutions must work for everyone who needs them. • Listen to the full podcast here 🎧 👉 lnkd.in/eDZtmHs8 • Find out more about our work with women 🔗 www.shp.org.uk/women #HomelessnessAwareness #DomesticViolence #RoughSleeping #Podcast #Advocacy #WomensHomelessness #CharityTuesday

Did you know reports of #domesticabuse rise by 38% when England loses in a tournament? Football does not cause domestic abuse, but it can make it more severe or frequent. It's a truly sobering statistic. Football is just a game, and that is all it is - even a final. Domestic abuse is never okay. This morning, we want to spotlight the incredible eye-opening campaign from Solace Women's Aid and @women's aid, who have used the #Euros to spread #awareness of football's link to #domesticabuse. Both organisations do amazing work helping and supporting victims of abuse. If you are experiencing abuse or know someone who is, you are not alone. Contact either organisation or call the National Abuse Helpline: 0808 2000 247. In an emergency, always call 999. #Shirt38 #NoMoreInjuryTime #HesComingHome #DVA

On June 28, the US Supreme Court ruled that cities can enact and enforce laws against people sleeping in public places without violating the US Constitution’s limits on cruel and unusual punishment. 🧑⚖️   This is the most significant decision on homelessness in the US since the 1980s, but it's a step in the wrong direction. We know that criminalising homelessness is counterproductive and inhumane, pushing people on the street further away from support systems there to help them. 😔   In the UK, the Vagrancy Act has criminalised rough sleeping since 1824. Although the previous government promised to scrap it, they intended to replace it with the Criminal Justice Bill, which contained new powers to criminalise people rough sleeping. ❌   The new Labour Government must prioritise ending the Vagrancy Act and decriminalising homelessness for good. ✅ #EndVagrancyAct #DecriminaliseHomelessness #EndHomelessness #PolicyChange #Labour

This week’s news has been shocking and horrifying. Our condolences go out to the Hunt family.   Unfortunately, this is a story we know all too well. Domestic abuse is a near-universal experience for the women we support.   Abuse is not limited to physical violence; it comes in many forms: 😔 Emotional or psychological abuse 🤬 Violent or threatening behaviour, such as intimidation 🚫 Controlling or coercive behaviour 💵 Economic abuse 🛑 Physical or sexual abuse   Every woman deserves to be safe from harm. That’s why we run specialised women-only services. Our expert teams give women a place to regroup, rest, and rebuild their lives in a safe space. #DomesticAbuse #WomensSupport #SafeSpace #RaiseAwareness #StopViolence

Earlier this year, one of our female residents wrote a first-hand account of how she was pushed into #homelessness and her experience of life on the streets. When she came to us, she was at her lowest - but we supported her to survive and thrive through one of our specialist women's services. Congratulations to Angela Rayner MP, the new Housing Secretary, and Matthew Pennycook MP, the new Housing Minister. There was a game of musical chairs for Housing Ministers in the last Government, with six in the last two years. We hope the new Government will bring more stability and deliver on its promises -including planning reform, housebuilding, and renter protection - to create “the biggest boost in affordable and social housing for a generation.” As someone who grew up in social housing, Ms Rayner will know the true merits of creating more affordable housing for struggling families. We look forward to seeing the Government tackle the #housingcrisis and getting the country back on track to ending homelessness, with support from ourselves and #homelessness organisations across the country. #HomelessnessAwareness #LabourParty #SocialHousing #Renting

As we arrive in a new political era, we want to say congratulations to the new PM Keir Starmer and his Labour Party (UK) Government. We know you'll have a lot on your plate over the next few days/weeks/months, but the scale of the #homelessness and #housingcrisis cannot be overstated (👇👇). There will be no quick fixes, but every day without action to address theses issues is a failure❌: 🏠 The lack of affordable housing 🌆 The highest number of people #roughsleeping in London on record 🏨Thousands living in temporary accommodation 🫸Renters struggling with insecurity and rising prices and During this campaign, the Labour Party have promised CHANGE. Now is the time to deliver on your promises and provide that change. We will be watching and waiting. #APlaceToCallHome #HomelessnessAwareness #Election24 #GE24
