SOIF MD Cat Tully has published a new blog sharing more about the UK House of Commons Liaison Committee's visionary new report. Cat writes: "This is the first time that any part of the UK government has had a holistic discussion on how to safeguard the wellbeing of current and next generations. I was one of two Specialist Advisers to the Liaison Committee’s inquiry, and I am thrilled to share some highlights from the Committee’s report, focusing on the parts about governance in times of uncertainty and the protection of democracy for future generations." She shares more about her role contributing expertise in embedding long-term thinking, connecting with global experts and crucially, linking to coalitions of young, diverse people who are pioneering strategic approaches. Special thanks to Sir Bernard Jenkin, Chair of the Liaison Committee and Major General Jonathan Shaw, fellow Specialist Adviser. Their exemplary leadership, alongside the commitment of all committee members and the support from the parliamentary staff, has been crucial to the success of this endeavour. The progressive approach they have outlined not only scrutinises the wellbeing of today’s UK but also that of tomorrow's, catalysing a shift towards governance that robustly integrates the voices of future generations. Explore her commentary on the report and discover how its recommendations could transform UK governance by aligning today's policies with the needs of next generations. "...if we’re all voting for the future, why do we feel our politics are so trapped in the short term?" Prof Thomas Hale of Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, and Cat Tully of School of International Futures (SOIF) write for our site about how government can better address "long problems" such as climate change or our aging society – and how its failure to do so is fuelling disillusionment with democracy.

As we countdown to #UKGE2024: Politicians are promising a better tomorrow. The future of democracy depends on their ability to deliver it "Whoever is elected on 4 July should turn the future from a campaign slogan into a plan of action. 🔸 They can start with the Liaison Committee’s recommendations around a Parliamentary Committee for the future, upgrades to the government's strategic planning capacity, and reviewing legislation for intergenerational fairness, among other measures. 🔸 But we can also go further and consider a national Future Generations Act or other measures to hardwire real incentives to serve the long-term interest into the machinery of policymaking. 🔸 Crucially, this agenda must connect with the people and their daily concerns, perhaps through an intergenerational national dialogue to capture a collective vision of the UK that we’d be happy to leave behind for our children and all those who come after." Professor Thomas Hale from Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford and I wrote about the failure to address long-term problems & give people a meaningful future which is contributing to decline in confidence in democracy - and how to address it. It refers to the important report on strategic thinking in Whitehall by the UK House of Commons Liaison Committee - a senior bipartisan committee - on this very topic. Our Future Pioneers Network, a cohort of early adopters, officials and politicians, convened to provide updates on their work towards the Summit of the Future. Here’s what happened in June: 🔴 We celebrated our communities' achievements, who have engaged with politicians in Cameroon, advocated for a bill for the well-being of future generations in Australia Taylor Dee Hawkins and presented the Inter-factional Union of the Parliament of Ukraine "Strategic Foresight of Ukraine" Ivan Vdovychenko 🔴 We discussed the need for strong implementation structures and advocated for champion countries to lead the future generations agenda at a UN level, with detailed updates on the Summit of The Future and Declaration on Future Generations 🔴 We gained insightful perspectives from Brazil on social participation in international processes like the G20 and Ireland on their progress with future generations legislation and the importance of political leadership. It was a pleasure to learn from Gustavo Westmann and Marc Ó Cathasaigh 🔴 We received updates from our network weavers on activities and initiatives in the African, European, and Latin American regions, fostering a global community committed to this cause -- Are you a politician, official or policy writer? The network aims to provide a supportive environment to exchange ideas and data, learn from each other and connect the good work going on into the UN process.
