We believe in safe lives and strong futures free from abuse and violence. Let's build them together.

About us

We’re Solace. For more than 40 years we’ve supported women and children in London to build safe and strong lives. Futures free from male abuse and violence. Whatever form violence comes in, from rape and trafficking to relationships based on psychological or financial control, we know escaping its effects can be the hardest thing to do. That’s why it's so important we’re here. We find creative and innovative ways to support thousands of women and children each year. Stand with us to end violence and abuse now. Our services include: - Advice, advocacy and support; improving safety, housing, finances and benefits, and health. - Counselling and support groups. - Safe refuge accommodation. - Dedicated support for families, children and young people. - North London Rape Crisis service. - Support for women with drug, alcohol and mental health issues. - Legal advice and representation. We also provide a service for male survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence in some London boroughs.

Sexual violence survivors still need to see step change in police response  His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services’ (HMICFRS) report into the progress of Operation Soteria, a programme to improve the police handling of rape and sexual offences, has highlighted some progress in the support victims and survivors are given, but shows much more needs to be done. Jennifer Cirone, Director of Services at Solace, said “Today’s report resonates with our experience that we are seeing some improvements in the experience of sexual violence survivors and that specialist trained officers who regularly communicate with the victim are making a real difference.  “However, it is disappointing to see that specialist teams are being staffed by officers who are not fully qualified and are still in training, and we see that it can be a real lottery for survivors dependent on the officer that is assigned to their case. That officers in over half of all forces are being regularly diverted to supporting events such as football matches and festivals undermines that this is a strategic priority for the police.  “We wholly support the report’s recommendations that the police should be doing more to ensure that their officers are using protection and prevention orders, and penalise breaches of these orders to ensure that survivors remain safe and can have faith in the system. So often a breach of bail is seen as “too minor”, leaving women at risk.  “The continued under funding of victim support services, such as specialist sexual violence advisors, highlighted in the report must also be urgently addressed. Survivors regularly express how this specialist support can help them to continue in and cope with the hugely traumatic experience of going through the criminal justice system and in their ability to recover. We urge the Government to provide stable and sustainable funding to victim services like Solace to ensure that all survivors can get the support they need at the right time.”

The more than 50% rise in violence against women and girls (VAWG) on British railways over two years is disturbing and completely unacceptable. Women should be free to exist in the world without the constant threat of violence. This is not solely a public transport issue, as the recent National Police Chiefs Council report highlights a 37% increase in recorded VAWG offences, including sexual assault, domestic abuse, stalking and harassment, in the past five years. Nahar Choudhury, Solace CEO, says “Once again, we are reminded that women are not safe in public spaces and in their home, and that not enough is being done to tackle this. The new Government has pledged to halve VAWG within a decade – we need to see this commitment backed by serious investment in to combat this epidemic. We must ensure that public spaces are safe for women and ensure that those affected by VAWG have access to timely and effective support. “Solace calls for ringfenced funding for specialist support services for survivors, education and engagement to change misogynistic attitudes, and gender-informed planning of public services including public transport, street lighting and policing.” https://lnkd.in/e_hvjTsD
