A leading membership organisation for local authority and public sector professionals throughout the UK.

About us

Solace is the representative body for senior strategic managers working in the public sector. We are committed to public sector excellence. We provide our members with opportunities for personal and professional development and seek to influence the debate about the future of public services to ensure that policy and legislation reflect the experience and expertise of our members. Solace companies comprise a membership organisation, a commercial services arm and a charitable trust. Solace in Business (SiB), formerly Solace Enterprises Limited, is the commercial services arm of Solace, and is a well established and successful consultancy specialising in supporting the public sector. Solely owned by Solace, Solace in Business operates commercially on `not-for-profit` business principles, reinvesting any surplus income to fund public sector research, policy development and promoting the high level skills training needed to be a modern manager in public service. Although initially specialising in local government SiB have for a number of years worked right across the public sector providing resourcing, development and organisational consultancy to a wide range of organisations. Customers of SiB include local councils, health trusts, police, fire and rescue, housing voluntary sector organisations and private sector service providers. Our experience in local government is second to none and we have supported all types of councils across the UK.

📢 We are proud to launch our latest report, 'Play', Solace's take on the 'state of the local nation' in England which outlines all of our key policy asks of the new Government. The report highlights our headline asks of Ministers, which are to: 1. Deliver a truly sustainable multi-year funding settlement for local government. 2. Shift more spending towards social infrastructure, with a specific focus on prevention/early intervention initiatives. 3. Address the workforce capacity and capability crisis facing the local public sector. Solace President Matt Prosser said: "We hope our suggestions help set the long-term path forward and that we begin to see the fundamental reset of the relationship between central and local government that ministers have already pledged. The ‘Play’ report is a blueprint for success, not for local government, but the local communities and people we are proud to serve." Solace Managing Director Graeme McDonald said: “As apolitical public servants with granular expertise of the implementation of policies across a place, Solace members are unique placed to ensure that the new Government can achieve the best possible outcomes for communities across the UK."
