I am glad to see that 8 leading children’s rights & youth justice charities – have published a review of successive government pledges to reform #childprisons are calling for the end to child imprisonment Jengba; Joint Enterprise NOT Guilty By Association have been calling for the abolition of the mandatory life sentence, with particular focus on children, since launching in 2010. We have watched children be convicted using the wrong interpretation of the #JointEnterprise doctrine receive minimum term sentences that are as long as they have been alive. We have witnessed children grow up in prison to leave as adults with over a decade of life experience lost. They leave with no skills or life experience. They are not allowed to return to their family home, and they live with the fear of recall hanging over them daily and yet are expected to function as productive members of society. The young people JENGbA support are not guilty of the crime they have been convicted either, making a life sentence even more abhorrent. We believe if a child commits a crime they should be cared for, nurtured and educated and if this means removing them from society as a matter of safety then it should be done humanely with rehabilitation at the forefront.
