About us

The Southwark skyline is an impressive sight. The incredibly diverse range of buildings, offices and social facilities make it a real mix of old and new. Extending from the River Thames into south-east London, Southwark encompasses some of the capital’s cultural hotspots, vibrant communities and acclaimed green spaces. Our central location provides excellent transport links making it a highly accessible area. We’re committed to making a real difference to the quality of life for local people, making the home environment cleaner, safer and more modern. Large-scale investment programmes are changing the face of the borough, and we’re working to ensure that this creates a fairer future for all in Southwark. We’re continually looking to support the growth of talent and to develop our workforce. So our employees are given the support, knowledge and opportunities they need to develop and deliver results that really improve the quality of life for our citizens. Personal development is embedded as a key part of our organisational culture with access to a wide range of training opportunities in addition to developmental work in local settings.

One of our priorities at Southwark Council is growing our network of Living Wage Employers in the borough, benefitting our residents and the local professional community. A big congratulations to SoLo Craft Fair Ltd who recently received their accreditation, demonstrating their investment in the well-being of their employees. Councillor John Batteson says it best: “We are delighted to welcome Solo Craft Fair to the network of over 360 accredited Living Wage Employers in Southwark. These are employers who are formally recognised for paying the London Living Wage which is £13.15 per hour. Over 6,000 people who work in Southwark have now received a pay-rise because of their employer becoming accredited. This work helps to lift Southwark residents out of in-work poverty and create fairer and more inclusive local economy.” We would also like to thank our teams at Southwark who tirelessly work to ensure a fair working wage for our community. We’ve been selected as a best practice case study by Friends of the Earth and Ashden for our ambitious work to improve the air we breathe in Southwark. Polluting vehicles contribute to nearly half of the air pollution in London so, through our Streets for People strategy, we’re moving away from favouring cars and freeing up space for walking, cycling and public transport. We’re improving walking and cycling routes to schools; creating more opportunities to walk and cycle; investing in our community spaces making them safer, greener and more pleasant environments. 60.3% of households in Southwark don’t own a car but at the moment we put cars first – we’re working with our residents and communities to change that. Over 9,000 residents responded to our most recent borough-wide engagement. 73% of people who responded said they are worried about the effects of climate change and 72% are concerned about the impact of poor air quality on children. This is the largest engagement exercise Southwark has ever run, and feedback is being used to help us develop a street-by-street plan, guiding measures such as where we will put cycle hangars, plant new trees, put in pedestrian crossings and more. We would like to thank the following people and teams for all of their hard work and dedication to this cause: Southwark Living Streets, Southwark Cyclists, Coco Yuen Ling Mak, Tom Robison, John Wade, Matt Clubb, Steve Grayer, Menna Davies, Richard Wells, James McAsh, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and many more. We were recently delighted for not one but two of our Government and Assurance team members to be nominated for the PPMA - Public Services People Managers Association One to Watch Programme. Clare Minzako, Organisational Development Partner, and Harriet Bird, Early Careers & Apprenticeships Partner, demonstrated the excellence that we are so proud of here at Southwark Council. Clare even went on to be named as a One to Watch Winner for 2024. Kirsty Dutton, Head of Organisational Development at Southwark Council, says it best: "Clare & Harriet completely represent the Southwark Council People Power approach - they both started Southwark at the same time, and have expertly navigated the challenges they have faced since then. They are shinning examples of what can happen when we grow our own talent and show us how young people can deliver to such high standards whilst representing the future of local government. As a Senior Leadership Team we are very proud of them both, and as someone who has been able to watch their journeys I couldn't think of two people more deserving of the recognition!" Over 5,000 Southwark workers receive pay rise thanks to the London Living Wage ✨ Bosco Katabazi, cleaner at Borough Market: “I can afford to pay my bills and pay my bills on time. That’s because I work for company that pays the London Living Wage.” Carla Sofia Cardso Pinto, food services co-ordinator at Spring Community Hub: “I can now do more with my children and afford to buy a car. It has helped me in my personal life a lot.” Tash Gorst, founder of Gather: “Business is about people, so it matters how you treat yours. We've always paid the Living Wage. Our staff are the heart of Gather; they care, they’re engaged and they stick around - for much longer than is typical for retail.” Sarah Kingston and Alex Birtles, co-founders of In Good Company: “We believe paying a fair wage is the cornerstone of being a good business. It’s a principle we wholeheartedly advocate for and encourage all the businesses we support to embrace.” Dr Dima Mekdad, executive director of Candoco Dance Company: “Paying London Living Wage as a minimum in our pay structure is essential and reflects our values. The accreditation was important to us as we would like to advocate for this in the wider networks we are working with.”   Cllr Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council: “The message is loud and clear: the London Living Wage is good for workers, good for business, and good for our local economy. That’s why we established the council’s Living Wage Unit to support employers to pay the London Living Wage. We are proud that Southwark leads the way with more and more employers who think, like us, that people deserve to be paid fairly for their hard work. It's more important than ever with the rising cost of living.” The number of #Southwark employers who pay the #LondonLivingWage grows month on month. In large part this is thanks to a group of local organisations who campaign to make Southwark a #LivingWagePlace If you are an employer interested in accreditation please contact [email protected]. You can also apply to a grant which cover three years accreditation fees. Living Wage Foundation
