There Is No Such Thing as Bad Publicity? In today’s digital age, the rapid dissemination of information through instant news generation and social media has reformed the way organisations handle crises. According to a recent survey (BCI Crisis Management Report 2023*), 80% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that external communications and public relations (PR) are integrated into their crisis response strategies. This statistic underscores the critical role that a coordinated PR response plays in managing public perception and mitigating potential damage during a crisis. The report confirmed that this topic is now considered to be the top factor in crisis response, up from third place in the 2021 survey (BCI Crisis Management Report 2021*). The prominence of this topic highlights how organisations recognise the need to have a proactive PR approach that can turn potential disasters into opportunities for positive engagement and transparency, reinforcing the adage that there is no such thing as bad publicity. A well-executed PR strategy during a crisis not only helps to manage the immediate fallout but also positions the organisation as trustworthy and responsible in the eyes of the public. By effectively communicating their response and actions, organisations are able to reinforce stakeholder trust even in times of crisis. In the world of social media and instant news, the ability to swiftly and accurately convey messages is not just a defensive measure but a strategic advantage, demonstrating that good publicity can emerge from even the toughest situations. This week, 25 years ago I responded to my first international oil spill. A 7.6 magnitude earthquake near the city of Izmit, Turkey, took thousands of lives and made hundreds of thousands homeless. It critically damaged the Tüpraş refinery which started fires. Oil and water from fire fighting operations quickly overwhelmed the separator, which had no power, and flowed in to the Sea of Marmara. Nothing could prepare me for the humanitarian disaster but professionally it was an education in adapting, improvisation and team work. As a stand alone operation, so as not to divert resources from the relief effort, we worked within the refinery itself and along the coast in Golcuk and Karamursel. Mark Shepherd, Tony Harmer, Martin Willman SM Dip, MIET, Richard Seddon, Kit Tennant, and the other team members who aren't on LinkedIn, our contribution may have been small but I'm proud to have done my bit. #Turkey #emergencyresponse #disasterrelief

It was a real pleasure to have been part of this recent exercise by NCOC If you watch the video (but don’t blink) you might just see me and Rob Self make an appearance - Rob as the exercise coach for the Planning Section and me as the SimCell director. Hard work, but good fun and a very rewarding trip. SpillConsult Ltd

North Caspian Operating Company N.V. (NCOC), the Operator of the North Caspian Project, conducted “AK CHAGALA-2024” Oil Spill Response Level 3 exercise on August 1-7. The exercise aimed to reinforce the Company's capabilities and stress its commitment to minimize environmental impact and strives for the preservation of marine ecosystems. The drill, which simulated a scenario of an oil spill in one of the ecologically sensitive regions, showcased NСOC's state-of-the-art equipment and rigorous response protocols. As part of the exercise on 5th of August, NCOC conducted demonstration of oil spill response equipment used in Kashagan project which will be deployed in case of oil spill. The exhibition in oil spill response base in Damba showcased the Tier 1 and Tier 2 OSR equipment intended for mechanical recovery dispersant application, in-situ burning and wildlife response, explaining its effectiveness in containing and mitigating oil spills from the water's surface. Also, during the visit on-water demonstration of NCOC equipment was conducted. The real-time deployment of oil skimmers, booms, tanks to recover oil-water emulsion, shallow water response vessels, support boats and performance of these specialized assets further highlighted the NCOC’s commitment to enhancing its oil spill preparedness. The 3-days exercise saw active participation from key stakeholders, proved effective cooperation between NCOC and state authorities, and was supported by subject matter experts from ExxonMobil and Shell. #NCOC #Kashagan #oilandgas #Kazakhstan #Atyrau #Aktau #caspiansea
