This week, 25 years ago I responded to my first international oil spill. A 7.6 magnitude earthquake near the city of Izmit, Turkey, took thousands of lives and made hundreds of thousands homeless. It critically damaged the Tüpraş refinery which started fires. Oil and water from fire fighting operations quickly overwhelmed the separator, which had no power, and flowed in to the Sea of Marmara. Nothing could prepare me for the humanitarian disaster but professionally it was an education in adapting, improvisation and team work. As a stand alone operation, so as not to divert resources from the relief effort, we worked within the refinery itself and along the coast in Golcuk and Karamursel.
