In today’s digital age, the rapid dissemination of information through instant news generation and social media has reformed the way organisations handle crises. According to a recent survey (BCI Crisis Management Report 2023*), 80% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that external communications and public relations (PR) are integrated into their crisis response strategies. This statistic underscores the critical role that a coordinated PR response plays in managing public perception and mitigating potential damage during a crisis. The report confirmed that this topic is now considered to be the top factor in crisis response, up from third place in the 2021 survey (BCI Crisis Management Report 2021*). The prominence of this topic highlights how organisations recognise the need to have a proactive PR approach that can turn potential disasters into opportunities for positive engagement and transparency, reinforcing the adage that there is no such thing as bad publicity. A well-executed PR strategy during a crisis not only helps to manage the immediate fallout but also positions the organisation as trustworthy and responsible in the eyes of the public. This week, 25 years ago I responded to my first international oil spill. A 7.6 magnitude earthquake near the city of Izmit, Turkey, took thousands of lives and made hundreds of thousands homeless. It critically damaged the Tüpraş refinery which started fires. Oil and water from fire fighting operations quickly overwhelmed the separator, which had no power, and flowed in to the Sea of Marmara. Nothing could prepare me for the humanitarian disaster but professionally it was an education in adapting, improvisation and team work. As a stand alone operation, so as not to divert resources from the relief effort, we worked within the refinery itself and along the coast in Golcuk and Karamursel. Rob Self and John Halfacre have been back in Atyrau, Kazakhstan this week, to support our long time clients and friends at NCOC with a Level 3 exercise, testing their Incident Management Team's (IMT) ability to respond to a complex oil spill scenario. The exercise gave the IMT an opportunity to run a proactive planning process in line with the Incident Command System (ICS) principals of incident management, and it reinforced the ICS training that SpillConsult Ltd recently delivered. Flight delays, missed connections and lost baggage. Dave Oland and myself were up against it from the start on this trip but a well equipped PPE stockpile meant crew training by SpillConsult Ltd still went ahead at the MAURILOG shore base. It's been a few years since I was last in Mauritania and my first time in Senegal. Really enjoyed 2 weeks of being back on the tools working with Dave Oland for SpillConsult Ltd and Paul Gunter maintaining the bp Mauritania and Senegal oil spill response equipment. Great collaboration with other service providers OSM Thome, MAURILOG, SEPCO Industries and SAWA PETROLEUM SERVICE.
